Job Description Head Custodian– (Night Shift)

Reports To:

Facilities Director and School Principal

Classification:
Full-Time / Non-Exempt (12-Month)

Location:

Brunswick Junior High School

First 6 months: $31.19/ hour

After 6 months: $31.69/ hour

Shift Differential: additional $1.00/hour starting after 2pm

Shift

Hours:

School Days: 2:00-10:30pm;
Non School Days:
Shift may change to day time hours

Job Summary

The Head Custodian is responsible for maintaining a clean, safe, and orderly environment within Brunswick School District facilities. This position requires a detail-oriented individual with strong leadership skills, the ability to perform a variety of cleaning and maintenance tasks, operate industrial cleaning equipment, and handle chemicals safely. The Head Custodian (day or night) supports the District's mission by leading the facility’s custodial team to ensure all environments are conducive to a positive learning and working space.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities Supervisory & Leadership
  • Supervise building custodial staff, assign daily duties, and assist with annual performance reviews.
  • Train new hires on District cleaning standards, equipment operation, and safety protocols.
  • Coordinate shift coverage for special events, facility rentals, or staff absences.
Cleaning and Maintenance
  • Performs routine and heavy cleaning duties, including sweeping, mopping, scrubbing, and vacuuming floors.
  • Gathers and empties trash and recycling.
  • Scrubs, sanitizes, and supplies restroom facilities.
  • Dusts furniture, walls, and equipment; cleans windows, mirrors, fixtures, and partitions.
  • Shampoos or steam-cleans carpets and rugs.
  • Performs routine minor facility maintenance activities and requests major repairs as needed.
  • Removes snow and ice from walkways around the building and grounds
  • Performs any other duties as assigned by the Facilities Director

Equipment, Supplies & Inventory

  • Operates cleaning equipment, such as vacuum cleaners, auto-scrubbers, and floor buffers, safely and effectively.
  • Mixes cleaning solutions and chemicals according to instructions and safety guidelines.
  • Follows procedures for the use of chemical cleaners and power machinery to prevent damage.
  • Manages inventory of cleaning supplies, assists in requisitioning equipment/supplies, and maintains organized storage areas.
Safety and Compliance
  • Inspects assigned buildings/areas daily and immediately reports or corrects unsafe conditions.
  • Adheres to occupational hazards, OSHA standards, and District safety rules.
  • Supports the District’s mission, administrative regulations, and goals.
  • Performs other related duties and responsibilities as assigned by supervisors.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. independently.
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, crouch, and twist for extended periods.
  • Ability to perform repetitive physical motions for long periods.
  • Ability to climb ladders and work safely at elevated heights.
  • Ability to safely operate commercial/industrial cleaning machinery.
Qualifications Preferred (but not required)
  • Education:

    High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Experience:

    2–3 years of commercial custodial/cleaning experience and/or experience in an educational or institutional facility.
  • Supervisory:
    Prior experience leading, training, or supervising a team.
  • Certifications/Licensing:
    Valid driver's license (if travel between district facilities is required).
  • Technical:
    Standard computer literacy (ability to check email, enter online supply orders, and log work orders).
  • Skills:

    Strong written and verbal communication skills; knowledge of occupational hazards, standard cleaning methods, and chemical mixing guidelines.
  • Working knowledge of floor restoration, stripping, and waxing processes.
