About the Position
As a General Maintenance Worker, you will work outdoors year-round in Arizona’s desert environment, playing a hands‑on role in building and maintaining the flood control structures that protect our communities. Through skilled and unskilled construction and maintenance work, you directly support public safety while helping preserve the natural landscape.
Beyond flood protection, the Flood Control District maintains multi‑use facilities, including hiking trails, bike paths, and open spaces, that enhance the quality of life across Maricopa County. This is more than a maintenance job; it’s an opportunity to help protect neighborhoods and care for community spaces residents use and value every day. The Flood Control District of Maricopa County provides essential public services to residents and visitors, which may require employees to work alternate work schedules.
In such cases, employees will be given reasonable notice by their supervisor.

One year of general maintenance work experience
High school diploma or GED
Successful candidates must currently possess, or have the ability to obtain, a valid Arizona driver’s license by the time of hire.
We Also ValueThree or more years of general maintenance experience
Experience working in the public sector
Knowledge of landscape and roadway maintenance and repair methods and materials
Knowledge of traffic laws and regulations involved in truck and equipment operations
Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions, and First Aid
Skill to safely and efficiently operate and maintain trucks and equipment in accordance with standard operating and safety procedures
Ability to follow written and verbal instructions
Ability to use a personal computer
Perform manual labor assignments in the building and maintenance and repair of roadways and Flood Control structures; maintain landscaping and clear brush and debris from roadways, structures, and facilities
Operate a variety of trucks, equipment, and hand tools in accordance with all safety regulations and procedures. Clean and maintain equipment as needed
Perform traffic control activities as needed; report safety hazards; perform tasks in the interest of public safety and property protection during emergencies
Load and unload materials, supplies, and equipment, and deliver to job sites as directed
Performs other duties as assigned or required
Exerting 50 - 100 pounds occasionally, 10 - 25 pounds frequently, or up to 10 - 20 pounds constantly
Incumbent may be subjected to extreme temperatures, wetness/humidity, respiratory hazards, and noise and vibration
