Janitor Position Summary

The University at Buffalo seeks Janitor staff to perform cleaning and unskilled maintenance tasks, supervise lower‑level cleaning staff, and maintain university buildings, grounds, and walkways.

• Perform general cleaning and disinfection tasks.
• Collect and remove trash, recycling, compost, and transport to centralized disposal.
• Replace misplaced items, furniture, and equipment.
• Wash floors, corridors, stairwells, walls, partitions, and windows using mops, detergents, brushes, and other cleaning devices.
• Vacuum, strip and wax floors, and shampoo carpets using manual or mechanical equipment.
• Scrub and clean restrooms and showers with hand‑operated equipment and cleaning agents; unclog toilets, traps, and sinks.
• Replace light bulbs, dust or wash light fixtures and high‑placed areas such as ceilings using ladders or appropriate equipment.
• Polish wood and metal surfaces, fixtures, furniture, and equipment.
• Move and arrange furniture and equipment for cleaning or preparation of meetings, events, or other activities.
• Sweep, remove snow, and salt walkways using mechanical and manual equipment.
• Report and recommend necessary repairs and maintenance requiring skilled trades to supervisor.
• Prepare, mix, and dilute cleaning solutions following manufacturer directions.
• Assist with supervision of lower‑level staff: assign tasks, provide instructions, training, and assistance.
• Demonstrate proper cleaning procedures.
• Review work of teams.
• Monitor time and attendance.
• Other duties as assigned.

• Physically able to perform the tasks of the position.
• Able to communicate orally and in writing.

• Floorcare experience.

• Stand, stoop, bend, and stretch for long periods.
• Perform medium to heavy physical labor, operate cleaning equipment and products, and ascend/descend ladders and scaffolds.
• May be assigned to clean laboratories, operating rooms, hospitals, schools, or custodial care settings requiring rigorous cleanliness and disinfection.
• Transport and remove snow from walkways and adjacent areas.
