Maintenance Associate

Part-Time (Up to 25 hours a week primarily nights and weekends, Hourly: $17.00-$20.00 per hour)

Temple Beth Zion (TBZ), a vibrant and historic Reform Jewish community, is seeking a reliable, detail-oriented, and mission-driven part-time Maintenance Associate to support the cleanliness, safety, and day-to-day functioning of our two campuses. This role is essential to ensuring that TBZ remains a welcoming, well-maintained environment for congregants, visitors, and tenants, including the Jewish Museum of Buffalo and Jewish Family Services.

The Maintenance Associate plays a key role in the physical presentation and operational readiness of the synagogue. The ideal candidate is proactive, follows directions well, takes pride in maintaining clean and safe facilities, and thrives in a role where both independence and teamwork matter. This position is public-facing and requires professionalism, courtesy, and a steady presence in a dynamic congregational environment.

Hours will be primarily nights and weekends.

• Perform daily cleaning tasks including dusting, vacuuming, mopping, washing surfaces, and using commercial cleaning products safely and effectively.
• Maintain outdoor areas seasonally, including sweeping, weeding, watering, snow removal, and salting walkways.
• Follow daily, weekly, monthly, and annual maintenance checklists; complete sign-offs to ensure consistency and accountability.
• Set up and break down rooms for events, including moving tables, chairs, and equipment according to instructions.
• Maintain organized supply closets and storage areas; track inventory and receive deliveries.
• Complete minor repairs (e.g., light bulbs, basic plumbing or electrical fixes) and report larger issues to the Maintenance Supervisor or Operations Manager.
• Open and close buildings, lock doors, and set alarms following established security procedures.
• Support security protocols in coordination with police, security personnel, and TBZ leadership.
• Interact professionally with congregants, visitors, and tenants; provide helpful assistance and escalates concerns appropriately.
• Take photos of events when requested and share them with the Operations Manager and Maintenance Supervisor.
• Follow all health and safety guidelines; complete incident or accident reports as needed.
• Attend maintenance meetings, "hot meetings," and staff meetings as requested.

• Experience in maintenance, custodial services, or facilities support.
• Ability to lift up to 50 lbs, climb stairs, bend, walk extensively, and perform physical tasks safely.
• Ability to speak, read, and write English; basic proficiency with MS Word and Outlook.
• Strong self-direction and ability to work independently without constant supervision.
• Professional, polite, and helpful demeanor in all interactions.
• Reliable transportation to TBZ locations (805 Delaware Ave. and 700 Sweet Home Road).
• Comfort working in a Jewish communal environment; willingness to learn about the rhythms of the Jewish calendar.
