Treatment Plant Operator – Group I/II/III Represented Position: AFSCME, AFL-CIO

General

Under the direction of the Operations Supervisor, this represented position will perform a variety of skilled and semi-skilled work in the operations and maintenance of the District’s wastewater treatment plant facilities; assist others in the operation, installation, maintenance and repair of plant equipment and facilities; and perform a variety of custodial grounds work. This position will play a key role in the training and development of Group I Operators.

The job also involves operating, monitoring, adjusting and maintaining wastewater treatment plant equipment; assuring proper equipment operation; performing laboratory testing; analyzing and making process changes to assure compliance with established regulations; processing digested sludge through de‑watering equipment according to established procedures; and monitoring and adjusting odor control equipment in compliance with related permits.

Illustrative Examples of Work / Essential Functions
  • Perform a variety of skilled and semi‑skilled work in the maintenance and repair of the District’s wastewater treatment plant facilities and equipment, cleaning and painting machinery, walls, pipes, fittings, and related items.
  • Assist Senior Operator in the training and development of Group I Operators.
  • Assist others in the operation, installation, maintenance, and repair of plant equipment and facilities.
  • Assist staff with preventative maintenance and equipment repairs.
  • Perform a variety of custodial and grounds work; clean and maintain work areas and perform related tasks as assigned.
  • Assist in plant operations as assigned; collect process data, perform field tests on samples; monitor equipment and instrument operations and notify operators of unusual situations.
  • Operate and maintain a variety of hand and power tools and equipment; drive a vehicle to local vendors to pick up and deliver parts and equipment.
  • Make periodic rounds to check the general operations of the plant; inspect and clean equipment; hose tanks.
  • Operate, monitor, adjust and maintain wastewater treatment plant equipment; ensure proper equipment operation.
  • Adjust, operate, and maintain de‑watering equipment.
  • Monitor and control the operation of the disinfection system.
  • Enter empty tanks and other confined spaces to perform inspections, cleaning, and maintenance.
  • Maintain and clean District facilities to assure a clean and safe work environment.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Knowledge Of
  • Laboratory procedures and analysis.
  • Wastewater treatment plant instrumentation.
  • Belt filter press and centrifuge operations.
  • Basic computer skills; familiarity with Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook).
  • Basic treatment plant equipment maintenance and repair.
  • Basic health and safety regulations related to plant operation and maintenance.
  • Operation and use of hand and power tools and equipment.
  • Maintenance of buildings and facilities in good repair.
  • Methods, equipment, and materials used in gardening and groundskeeping.
Abilities
  • Work effectively to assist in training Operators in all aspects of wastewater treatment.
  • Operate a variety of hand tools, machinery, vehicles, and equipment.
  • Record accurate log readings and operating information.
