A Brief Summary of This Position
The Maintenance Supervisor is accountable for the supervision and coordination of the Maintenance Department. The incumbent works closely with the Managers and Supervisors of the site. The incumbent is responsible for managing various resources during emergency situations such as electrical faults, machine breakdowns, safety events, and the preventive maintenance program. The position reports to the Manufacturing Engineering Manager and has up to 25 direct reports.
EssentialFunctions
- Maintain accurate files in compliance with Occupational Health and Safety Administration and Environmental Protection Agency standards.
- Administer the preventive maintenance program for all production equipment.
- Organize and control the use of maintenance resources to improve maintenance costs and equipment reliability.
- Instill an orientation for safety, environmental compliance and quality service in all aligned personnel.
- Manage and control the use of outside contractors and services to economically supplement in‑house resources.
- Select and implement maintenance systems, programs and controls to economically manage maintenance resources and monitor maintenance effectiveness.
- Work in conjunction with Engineers, Managers, Supervisors and contractors on equipment upgrade and replacement projects.
- Select and schedule training to continuously upgrade the skills and proficiency of all assigned personnel and economically expand maintenance capabilities.
- Maintain harmonious and supportive relationships with all staff members.
- Work in the plant five days per week and be on call as needed on off‑shift and weekends; flex working hours to align with 24/7 operation.
- Implement work schedules to maximize utilization of manpower, machines and materials.
- Assign work to maintenance employees.
- Assist employee teams in problem solving, project justification and implementation.
- Define performance results and standards expected of assigned personnel.
- Monitor performance and take corrective action as necessary.
- Observe proper operating of assigned equipment.
- Recommend new or improved machines, equipment and facilities as required.
- Maintain accurate machine information and history files.
- Improve equipment reliability through operational and maintenance changes or design improvements.
- Maintain a spare parts inventory.
- Have a basic understanding of hazardous waste management.
- Promote continuous improvement through encouragement of employees.
- Implement improvements and communicate status to operational leadership, the maintenance team and other parties as needed.
- Administer company policies in a firm, fair and consistent manner.
- Work closely with Human Resources to administer personnel policies and procedures.
- Maintain good housekeeping and safe working conditions in the assigned area.
- Report and investigate all incidents in a timely manner.
- Train new employees on department and company activities and safety procedures.
- Assist in the attainment of division and company goals and objectives.
- Demonstrate a commitment to the Valmont Safety Mission and corporate safety’s Critical Success Factors process by learning and applying all provided safety training.
- Perform all other duties assigned by the Manager.
- Associate or Technical Degree in Industrial Maintenance or a related field with at least four years of relevant experience.
- Two years of previous work experience in a leadership role.
- Ability to travel as needed; up to 5 percent travel may be required.
- Basic understanding of engineering knowledge and ability to understand engineering drawings.
- Strong verbal and written communication, interpersonal and organizational skills.
- Ability to interact with all levels of the organization.
- Excellent computer skills in Microsoft programs (Word, Excel, Outlook, Microsoft Project or similar).
- Ability to use independent judgment and discretion with minimum supervision.
- Excellent understanding of manufacturing and facility equipment operations.
- Understanding of OSHA standards for general industry.
- Self‑starter who can work independently or as part of a team.
