Position SummaryThe Maintenance Helper supports the Maintenance Department by assisting with facility upkeep, grounds maintenance, minor repairs, and general plant maintenance activities. This position plays a vital role in maintaining a safe, clean, and compliant manufacturing environment while supporting Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs), food safety standards, and operational efficiency.
This is a union-represented position and is subject to the terms and conditions of the applicable Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).
The ideal candidate is dependable, safety-focused, mechanically inclined, and enjoys working in a hands-on industrial environment.
Key Responsibilities- Support facility maintenance activities to ensure the plant remains safe, clean, and operational.
- Maintain grounds and exterior areas, including parking lots, sidewalks, loading docks, fence lines, and common areas.
- Remove litter, debris, weeds, and other materials to maintain facility appearance and safety.
- Perform painting projects, including surface preparation, application, and maintenance.
- Complete minor facility repairs, including fencing, flooring, signage, basic concrete work, and drinking water systems.
- Perform routine maintenance tasks such as restroom repairs, lighting replacement, and HVAC/air handler filter maintenance.
- Assist with preventive maintenance (PM) activities and corrective maintenance work orders.
- Support GMP and Prerequisite Program (PRP) compliance by addressing findings from inspections and audits.
- Follow all plant safety programs and procedures, including Lockout/Tagout (LOTO), Confined Space Entry, Fall Protection, and Hazard Communication requirements.
- Operate equipment such as forklifts, scissor lifts, boom lifts, and telehandlers safely and effectively.
- Inspect and maintain safety equipment, including fire extinguishers, ladders, eyewash stations, and hose reels.
- Maintain proper housekeeping and organization of maintenance tools, equipment, and work areas.
- Communicate effectively with supervisors, maintenance personnel, and other departments regarding work assignments and facility needs.
- Report safety concerns, near misses, injuries, property damage, and operational issues promptly.
- Participate in food safety, quality, and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- High School Diploma or equivalent required.
- One to two years of experience in food manufacturing, industrial maintenance, facility maintenance, or a related environment preferred.
- Experience with industrial cleaning, facility maintenance, or grounds maintenance preferred.
- Basic mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting skills.
- Ability to safely use maintenance tools, cleaning equipment, and materials.
- Understanding of chemical safety and safe work practices.
- Strong work ethic and willingness to learn new skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Certifications related to maintenance, equipment operation, or safety are a plus.
- Ability to work overtime, weekends, holidays, and on-call assignments as needed.
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, climb, and perform physical work throughout the shift.
- Ability to lift and carry 50 pounds or more on a regular basis.
- Ability to work in manufacturing environments that may include exposure to dust, noise, heat, cold, and varying weather conditions.
- Ability to safely work at heights, on ladders, and in confined spaces when required.
- Ability to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Strong physical stamina, coordination, and attention to safety.
