Job Goal(s)

To provide students, staff, and community members with a safe, attractive, comfortable, and clean place in which to learn, play, and develop. Perform general light maintenance and repairs necessary to maintain the physical school plant and grounds in excellent operating condition.

Qualifications
  • Successful completion of functional capacity exam and drug and alcohol screening.
  • Knowledge of methods, materials, and equipment used in custodial and light maintenance work.
  • Demonstrated aptitude for successful fulfillment of assigned performance responsibilities.
  • Possess a Black Seal Firemen's License for boiler operation or be willing to obtain license within one year of employment.
  • Possess a valid Motor Vehicle Driver's License.
  • Other alternatives acceptable to the Board.
Performance Responsibilities
  • Possesses and demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform cleaning custodial and light maintenance tasks.
  • Plans and prepares for assignments to ensure effective and efficient completion.
  • Requisition s and receives supplies and equipment, and maintains necessary inventories.
  • Cleans and maintains the building and grounds as assigned and prescribed by the Custodial and Maintenance Workers Handbook.
  • Performs a daily inspection to ensure building and grounds are clean, organized and free from hazards.
  • Regulates heat, ventilation, and air conditioning systems to provide temperatures appropriate to the season and to ensure economical use of fuel, water, and electricity.
  • Assists in snow removal. Shovels and/or sands walks, driveways, parking areas, and steps, as appropriate.
  • Scrubs fixtures, disinfects toilet floors, empties and sanitizes all receptacles and drinking fountains on a daily basis.
  • Conducts an ongoing program of general maintenance, upkeep, and makes minor repairs to building and premises as requested.
  • Performs grounds‑keeping tasks such as grass cutting, tree trimming, and the like, as necessary, to maintain the school grounds in a safe and attractive condition.
  • Maintains all floors in a clean and attractive condition and in a good state of preservation.
  • Maintains on a regular schedule all boilers, motors, and other mechanical equipment requiring scheduled servicing.
  • Performs a variety of room arranging, equipment and furniture transporting, and storage and delivery tasks in the school.
  • Moves furniture or equipment within and between buildings as required for various activities.
  • Performs maintenance, safety, and security checks.
  • Checks daily to ensure that all exit doors are open and all panic bolts are working properly during building occupancy.
  • Reports immediately to the building supervisor any damage to school property.
  • Assumes responsibility for general security of the building, including opening/closing, securing doors and windows, setting alarm, and turning off non‑essential lights.
  • Complies with local laws and procedures for the storage and disposal of trash.
  • Assumes responsibility for general fire safety of the building. Conducts periodic inspections of all electrical installations.
  • Demonstrates human relations and communications skills.
  • Assists in the installation, servicing, repair, and light maintenance of electrical, plumbing, carpentry, and related building components and systems.
  • Works cooperatively with maintenance mechanics and custodial workers to complete assignments.
  • Maintains scheduled filter, oil, and belt changes on all ventilation systems within building and all roof‑top units.
  • Assists with grounds upkeep of building property, fields, easements, parking areas, and playgrounds.
  • Maintains rooftop cleanliness and keeps all drains free of debris as necessary.
  • Capability to handle all aspects of light building maintenance as necessary.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Salary

Starting salary of $54,899 in accordance with the collective bargaining agreement.

Requirements
  • New Jersey resident or willingness to relocate.
  • Controlled substance testing and successful completion of criminal history background check required of all applicants offered employment.
Evaluation

Performance of this job will be evaluated annually in accordance with the provisions of the Board's policy on Evaluation of Non‑Certified Personnel.
