Custodian-Brighton (260004DC)

An official position within the Massachusetts Trial Court facilities department.

Position Summary

Performs custodial duties to ensure that court facilities are clean, orderly, and accessible. Cleans offices, bathrooms, and other facility spaces. Removes refuse. Mows lawns and shovels snow as needed. Assists with maintenance duties as required.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities
  • Dust and wet mop floors and stairways and operate vacuum to clean carpet areas; ensure wet floor signs are properly placed.
  • Strip wax, apply fresh wax, and operate power buffer to polish floors.
  • Dust furniture, empty wastepaper baskets, and clean windows, mirrors, doors, and wash walls.
  • Change light bulbs.
  • Operate KAIVAC and IMOP equipment.
  • Clean and sanitize drinking fountains and restrooms, replenishing supplies and dispensers.
  • Check lights and secure windows and building entrances after cleaning or on a regular basis.
  • Report irregular activities and advise supervisor of conditions requiring major maintenance or repair.
  • Move furniture to facilitate cleaning, assist in personnel transfers, or rearrange office layout.
  • Empty trash cans and sweep around building entrances.
  • Mow lawns and shovel snow and sidewalks as necessary.
  • Provide coverage for other custodians as needed.
  • Perform other duties as required.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements

No degree requirement. Three (3) years of related work experience.

Knowledge,

Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge of cleaning methods and supplies, cleaning products and tools, floor care, KAIVAC and IMOP equipment.
  • Skill in verbal and written communication, performing a variety of cleaning duties.
  • Ability to meet schedules and deadlines of the work, follow oral and written directions, operate various types of cleaning equipment, work independently or with a team, interact with people from various backgrounds, and sanitize restrooms.
Supervisory Responsibility

This position does not require supervision of others.

Working Conditions

Work is frequently performed in office or similar indoor environments, outdoor environments, warehouses or file/storage environments, shops/facilities environments. Work requires frequent exposure to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals or substances.

Physical Demands

This position requires heavy work: exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly while moving objects.
