Position Overview

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources is seeking to hire two Site Technician II’s at Rice Lake State Fish & Wildlife Area for the Office of Land Management. Duties include operating heavy vehicles and equipment for site maintenance, improvement, renovation, and construction projects; farming wildlife food production; maintaining artificial nest structures; providing training to new employees and volunteers; and performing general maintenance tasks.

Functions
  • Under direct supervision, performs semi‑skilled and routine maintenance, operational and program support tasks at Rice Lake/Double “T” SF&WA.
  • Participates in the routine maintenance of the site's vehicles, equipment and tools.
  • Inspects to assure buildings and gates are properly locked.
  • Inspects public use areas for safety hazards.
  • On an intermittent or seasonal basis provides leadership and direction to seasonal employees, volunteers and other staff.
  • Assists with maintenance of site buildings and grounds.
  • Performs semi‑skilled cyclical and routine maintenance work on site buildings.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.
Minimum Qualification
  • High school graduation or equivalent and two years of maintenance or farming experience, preferably in building trades or operation of heavy equipment or machinery.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Working knowledge of tools and equipment used in the trades and/or operation of heavy equipment or farm machinery and implements, warehouses.
  • Two (2) years of experience following written and oral instructions.
  • One (1) year of experience informing visitors of site facilities, programs, rules, and regulations.
  • One (1) year of experience in outdoor recreation.
  • One (1) year of experience in groundskeeping.
Conditions of Employment
  • Requires completion of a background check.
  • Requires possession of a valid Class A Commercial Driver’s License with air brakes designation.
  • Must obtain a pesticide/herbicide operator’s license within six months of employment.
  • Must endure exposure to the elements on a year‑round basis.
  • Physical ability to operate and maintain tools, equipment, and materials used in maintenance, repair, and care of site resources, buildings, and grounds.
  • Ability to lift, carry, and transport loads exceeding sixty pounds.
  • Ability to walk over rough and broken terrain.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain First Aid/CPR certification.
Work Hours

Both positions will work:
Jan 1 – Apr 30, Monday – Friday, 7 am–3 pm;
May 1 – Oct 15, Monday – Friday 7 am–3 pm (rotates every 4th weekend);
From Oct 16 – Dec 31, one position will work Tuesday – Sat and the other will work Sunday – Thursday 4 am–12 pm; all schedules include a ½ hr lunch.
