The Maintenance Specialist provides essential custodial, grounds keeping, and facility upkeep services at the assigned College campus. This role focuses on ensuring a clean, safe, and professional environment, taking on primary custodial duties, restorative maintenance, light painting, and mail courier services between campuses on a rotating or assigned basis.
Responsibilities1. Performs comprehensive general custodial duties including vacuuming, sweeping, mopping floors, and cleaning whiteboards in classrooms, offices, and common areas.
2. Assists with cleaning and maintaining the colleges fleet of vehicles.
3. Cleans, sanitizes, and consistently stocks all campus restrooms with necessary supplies.
4. Empties trash and recycling containers throughout the Campus and disposes of waste appropriately.
5. Keeps facility entryways, patios, and immediate exterior walkways tidy, ensuring they are free of leaves and debris.
6. Performs regular drain maintenance to ensure proper plumbing functionality.
7. Assists maintenance technicians and provides interior and exterior facility‑painting services and routine touch‑ups.
8. May perform the daily inter-campus mail route on a rotating or assigned basis, including gathering mail from the Canton Campus's mailroom and Bookstore to begin the delivery route.
9. Reports difficulties, maintenance needs, and potential problem issues to the Facilities Director or appropriate campus supervisor.
10. Performs other duties as assigned by the Supervisor.
Supervisory ResponsibilitiesThis position has no supervisory responsibilities.
Qualifications1. A high school diploma or general education degree (GED) is required.
2. One year of related custodial, cleaning, or general maintenance experience is preferred.
3. Experience using commercial-type paint and performing basic preventative maintenance is preferred.
4. A current and valid Illinois State Driver's License and a satisfactory personal and/or professional driving record is required.
5. Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
6. Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions.
7. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.
8. Superior organizational, interpersonal, client service, and communication skills are required.
9. Ability to demonstrate responsibility, dependability, and a positive attitude is preferred.
Physical Demands / Work EnvironmentThe physical demands and work environment described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Physical demands for this position include the ability to stand, sit, walk, reach, stoop, bend, push, pull, kneel, climb, use hands and fingers, and talk/hear for extended periods. This position requires the ability to lift and/or carry weight up to forty (40) pounds without assistance.
Vision requirements include the ability to view and read instructions and the ability to operate a vehicle safely.
The work environment for this position includes extremes in indoor and outdoor temperatures. Exposure to fumes or airborne particles and toxic or caustic chemicals such as paint, bleach, and commercial cleaning agents.
