Maintenance Technician / Mechanic
Overview
Be part of the nation's only repository for the disposal of nuclear waste known as Transuranic (TRU) waste. Salado Isolation Mining Contractors, LLC (SIMCO), managing and operating contractor of the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP), is currently seeking a qualified individual to serve as a Surface Plant Helper and join our team located in Carlsbad, New Mexico.
This is a USW bargaining unit position. This position will be filled with SIMCO USW membership first in accordance with the Collective Bargaining Agreement before any other candidate considerations.
Responsibilities- Assist with planning, layout, installation, troubleshooting and repair of facility equipment and systems.
- Follow all safety procedures, regulations, and policies.
- Conduct frequent inspections of work area to ensure safe working conditions.
- Promptly report any hazards or unsafe conditions to management.
- Perform mechanical/electrical tasks (plumbing, facility equipment, etc.).
- Transport, package, mark, label, and place hazardous and non-hazardous materials into designated storage areas.
- Perform duties related to the operation and maintenance of both surface and underground tool cribs.
- Perform similar and related duties as assigned.
- Potentially work in the WIPP underground mine and contaminated areas, requiring personal protective equipment with respirator and a pulmonary function test.
- Shift work may be required.
- High school graduate or equivalency.
- Must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in limited circumstances.
- One year of verifiable experience operating heavy equipment such as forklifts, skid steers, or similar.
- Class A CDL, previous radiation technology experience, or hazardous material handling experience preferred.
- Three (3) years of general maintenance experience desired.

Pay rate of $35.31 per hour with annual increase in August to $36.19 (2026) per the CBA.
