Job Summary
Under close supervision, perform routine and repetitive manual duties on construction, maintenance setup and repair crews in a department; observe safety regulations; perform duties in a higher classification as assigned; and perform related duties as required.
HoursVaries Monday–Sunday, depending on facility needs.
Responsibilities- Public Works Maintenance crew: loads and unloads heavy materials or equipment from trucks; digs and fills holes, trenches, and ditches; maintains and repairs streets; operates automatic and manual digging tools; operates motorized equipment such as trucks and skip loaders; services and lubricates motorized equipment; cleans hand tools and work areas; diverts traffic using flags and barricades; cuts down weeds in vacant lots.
- Park Maintenance crew: maintains grounds, medians, and outdoor landscaped areas including planting, cultivating, trimming, watering and spraying plants, trees, and grass; operates sprayers and mowers; makes minor repairs to irrigation systems; diverts traffic using street cones.
- Building Maintenance crew: maintains facilities and buildings including cleaning rugs, walls, floors, restrooms, and office spaces; performs building repairs and construction work; works irregular shifts.
- Carson Community Center Setup/Custodial crew: maintains facilities by cleaning carpets, walls, floors, restrooms, and office spaces; dusts and polishes furniture, woodwork and fixtures; vacuums carpets; orders supplies; prepares work schedules; provides guidance to Maintenance Aides; inspects work; operates equipment such as vacuum cleaners, buffers, carpet extractors, and air lifts; trains aides; maintains records; assists in personnel selection; performs related duties as assigned.
- Completion of formal education sufficient to read and write at the level required for successful job performance.
- Some experience performing basic laboring work.
- Community Center requires two years of custodial and setup work, one of which must have been in a hotel, banquet, meeting room, or trade show facility.
- Tools and methods employed in basic laboring work; basic operation of motorized equipment.
- Provisions of the California Vehicle Code applicable to the operation of vehicles on the highway.
- Proper methods, equipment, terminology, and materials used in custodial work and physical setup for meeting rooms, banquets, and trade shows.
- Health and safety regulations.
- Cleaning materials and disinfectants used in custodial work.
- Record‑keeping techniques.
- Learn the operations of the department to which assigned.
- Use tools and equipment with skill and safety.
- Read and interpret blueprints.
- Work from heights.
- Understand and carry out oral and written directions.
- Meet approved minimal physical and medical standards.
- Demonstrate physical endurance, agility, and strength necessary for heavy manual labor.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
