Position: WATER RECLAMATION FACILITY OPERATOR- NORTH CARY

Water Reclamation Facility Operator:
Keeping Essential Services Flowing

Do you have a knack for solving complex problems and a passion for protecting the environment? If so, we want you to join our team as a Water Reclamation Facility Operator at the North Cary Water Reclamation Facility.

Work is performed under the regular supervision of the Facility Operations Supervisor. You may have lead worker duties over other plant personnel depending on your career ladder attainment.

Shift schedule: noon to midnight—two days on, two days off, five days on, five days off and repeat.

Critical position
—you are required to report to work during adverse weather or other emergency situations, maintain equipment, operate the facility and/or assist the Department in any capacity necessary to continue Town operations.

Anticipated Hiring Range: $54,163 - $66,539*

* Hiring range varies based on the level of direct experience and possession of certifications, and it may be higher for exceptionally qualified candidates.

Responsibilities
  • Operate and maintain a variety of complex equipment, including pumps, valves, scum thickeners, sludge thickening facilities, reclaimed water pump stations, and regional influent pump stations.
  • Monitor plant operations using SCADA systems, controls, printers, CCTV, and composite samplers.
  • Perform analytical analyses (pH, TSS, alkalinity, settleability, dissolved oxygen, ortho phosphorus, fecal coliforms, ammonia, nitrates, total residual chlorine, microscopy, percent solids) and laboratory testing.
  • Adjust flow charts, chemical reagents, and chemical feed systems to meet changing operational conditions.
  • Maintain process analyzers, perform calibrations and services as prescribed.
  • Operate biosolids wasting, facilitate biosolids storage and hauling operations, and monitor related activities.
  • Regulate and adjust motors, pumps, blowers, and valves to meet changing operational conditions.
  • Maintain records and reports, use the Office Suite, attend virtual meetings, and communicate via MS Teams and email.
  • Assist maintenance personnel and perform routine janitorial duties.
  • Perform preventive and corrective maintenance tasks on assigned wastewater treatment equipment and report maintenance problems.
  • Perform other job‑related tasks as required.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
  • NC Biological Wastewater Operator Grade I certification (strongly preferred) or ability to become certified within 12 months of hire.
  • Must live within fifty (50) miles of the facility and be able to respond within one (1) hour during call‑back/stand‑by duties.
  • Experience with grade IV biological nutrient removal facilities, electrical and electronic systems, and hydraulic, chemical and mechanical principles pertinent to wastewater treatment.
  • Ability to operate a computer relative to plant operation, troubleshoot malfunctions, and type.
  • Ability to detect flaws in mechanical equipment and determine proper remedial measures.
  • Ability to conduct routine laboratory tests, understand and follow complex oral and written instructions, read meters and charts accurately, and maintain shift operation records.
  • Capability to work 12‑hour shifts over multiple days, including early morning and overnight hours, and in adverse conditions (heat, cold, rain, unpleasant surroundings).
  • Physical abilities: move freely (climb stairs/ladders, crawl into tight spaces), lift moderate to heavy weights, hear, talk, smell, and possess visual acuity necessary for paperwork and repairs.
Physical Requirements
  • Medium to heavy work with exposure to various environmental conditions such as heat, cold, rain, and unpleasant surroundings.
  • Must have physical agility to move freely, including climbing stairs and ladders and crawling into tight spaces.
  • Moderate to heavy lifting required.
  • Visual acuity necessary to perform paperwork, read gauges, and make repairs.
  • Must be able to hear, talk, and smell.
