Custodian I – Van Buren Elementary School, Cedar Rapids, Iowa
Salary: $21.51 per hour (Category "B" of salary schedule)
Job Type: Full‑time
Principal Duties- Assume responsibility for the building in the absence of the Engineer
- Take down flag and take care of school no‑parking signs
- General cleaning such as sweeping, emptying waste receptacles, cleaning toilet facilities, filling dispensers, cleaning carpets and blinds
- Clean light fixtures and replace bulbs
- Perform yard work: grass mowing, weeding, trimming, and general cleanup
- Keep walkways and entries clear of ice and snow
- Help with receiving, storing, and delivering supplies for the building and cafeteria
- Move and arrange furniture for school functions
- Respond to alarm calls
- Carry out additional requests of Principal and Building Engineer as needed
- Knowledge of modern cleaning methods and use and care of materials, tools, and equipment
- Ability to perform minor building and equipment repairs
- Ability to plan, organize, and carry out work schedules efficiently
- Physical strength, stamina, endurance; able to perform vigorous manual work, climb stairs, and lift heavy loads
- Pass the Physical Capacity Profile tests
- Neat appearance and good work habits
- Able to function with minimal instruction and supervision after brief training
- Hours of employment vary depending on location and assignment
- Computer literacy required
- Read, write, and understand English
Ability to solve problems effectively and interpret a variety of instructions in written, oral, diagram or schedule form.

Establish and maintain effective working relationships with administrators, colleagues, community members, staff, and students. Speak clearly and concisely in oral and written communication. Perform duties with awareness of district requirements and Board of Education policies.
Physical DemandsFrequent standing, walking, climbing, hand use, squatting, stooping, kneeling, reaching above head, and pushing/pulling or lifting heavy objects. Example demands: climb ladder with ~10 lb tool belt, shoveling 30 lb push, pushing 40 lb each hand, lifting 50 lb bucket, lifting 70 lb desk end, transferring 50 lb from ground to 41 in., lifting 30 lb from 37 in. to 67 in., carrying 80 lb for 20 ft., pushing 70 lb for 25 ft. May require exerting up to 100 lb force occasionally.
WorkingEnvironment
Quiet indoor environment; may work in areas that require hearing protection. Employee will work on tile, wood, terrazzo, and concrete surfaces, inside and outside under various weather conditions.
