AUTO MECHANIC-ELSC – TRANSPORTATION
Compensation: $25.76/hour, Non-Exempt.
Classification- Auto Mechanic
- Overhaul, repair, and service all district vehicles, sub‑assemblies, and accessories (gasoline, LPG, electric, diesel buses, vans, cars, trucks).
- Understand and use instructional and technical manuals.
- Use diagnostic tools and read schematics.
- Perform vehicle safety inspections.
- Maintain a cooperative attitude and build rapport with students, peers, supervisors, parents, school personnel, and the community.
- Present a professional appearance, including attire, alertness, and attentiveness.
- Complete all required training, meetings, classes, and professional development.
- Accurately complete reports and paperwork on time.
- Abide by federal, state, and district policies, procedures, and expectations.
- Utilize technology as required.
- Safely operate school buses, district vehicles, and equipment.
- Provide emergency road service calls.
- Conduct property maintenance, including snow removal.
- Substitute as bus and van driver.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- High school diploma or equivalent; GED accepted.
- Minimum of five years large truck and/or auto‑mechanic experience (preferred).
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
- Furnish all auto‑mechanic small hand tools.
- Maintain a valid Class B CDL license with proper endorsement within the required timeframe.
- Maintain a valid DOT physical and Medical Certificate per FMCSA requirements.
- Register and maintain an account with FMCSA Clearinghouse; approve queries within 24 hours.
- Pass pre‑employment and all subsequent agility tests, driving history checks, periodic background checks, and substance‑abuse screening.
- Pass all random and reasonable‑suspicion alcohol and/or drug tests.
- Prioritize tasks to meet tight deadlines and adapt to continuous interruptions.
- Willingness to learn new skills and unfamiliar systems.
- Work well with all personality types.
- Effective problem‑solving, basic mathematical computation, and communication skills.
- Knowledge of or ability to navigate Cedar Rapids and surrounding areas.
- Accept and implement coaching and training.
- Repeated sitting, standing, climbing, walking, stooping, bending, squatting, crawling, kneeling; maintaining balance for extended periods.
- Repeatedly push, pull, lift, carry, and move objects weighing up to 125 pounds for 100 feet or more.
- Continuous use of hands, fingers, and wrists to manipulate fine objects and tools repetitively.
- Use both hands and legs simultaneously.
- Reach over head for extended periods.
- Rapid mental and muscular coordination.
- Accurate depth perception and clear vision at varying distances to see small details.
- Peripheral vision to distinguish colors.
- Operate hydraulic, electric, and air equipment and tools.
- Ascend and descend approximately 14" steps regularly.
- Enter and exit vehicles regularly.
- Contact with blood‑borne pathogens and bodily fluids.
- Exposure to chemicals, fuels, loud noise, intense brightness, fumes, and airborne particles.
- Moving mechanical parts, elevated heights, extreme temperatures and weather.
- Vibratory tools, electricity, and hydraulic systems.
- Work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
- Direct contact with public, students, and district staff.
- Exposure to heights, loud noises, bright light, fumes, dust, chemicals, and odors.
- Work with moving vehicles, motorized wheelchair lifts, and equipment.
