Job Title: Custodial Support Specialist

HOURS: 2:30pm - 11:00pm

Salary: $55,000

LOCATION: Various Locations/ELSC

REPORTING STRUCTURE

Reports directly to the Custodial Supervisor.

JOB SUMMARY

The Custodial Support Specialist serves as a key technical resource responsible for maintaining high sanitation standards across all district facilities through staff education, oversight, and operational audits. The Specialist drives operational excellence by onboarding new hires, retraining staff to meet performance standards, auditing facility cleanliness, and assisting in the development of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). The Custodial Support Specialist provides second shift staff with general operational support, ensures equipment and asset protection, and monitors supply control to maximize budget efficiency.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Operational Leadership & Development

  • Onboard new custodial personnel on core cleaning techniques and supervisor-approved protocols.
  • Provide supportive coaching and retraining to help staff reach our performance and cleanliness standards.
  • Demonstrate proper use of chemicals, personal protective equipment (PPE), and various custodial equipment.
  • Provide hands-on coaching and dynamic instruction during real-time evening operations to improve staff technique and efficiency.
  • Serve as a point of contact for facility emergencies during second shift, ensuring rapid response and proper communication.

Quality Assurance & Operations

  • Audit buildings and facility zones daily to ensure compliance with district cleaning and sanitation standards.
  • Document inspection findings and deliver actionable, constructive feedback to staff and the Custodial Supervisor.
  • Identify systemic operational deficiencies and assist in implementing immediate operational adjustments and performance support at the direction of the Custodial Supervisor.
  • Collaborate with Custodial Supervisor to ensure seamless shift handoffs and operational continuity.
  • Track quality assurance audit metrics over time to identify department-wide training needs and skill gaps.

Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) Development & Compliance

  • Draft and revise cleaning SOPs under the direct guidance and technical direction of the Custodial Supervisor.
  • Integrate modern cleaning methodologies and safety rules into training documentation.
  • Coach team compliance with approved procedures and district safety guidelines.
  • Report compliance deficiencies to the Custodial Supervisor.
  • Develop standardized visual aids, quick-reference instruction cards, and training checklists for site-level custodians.

Communication & Collaboration

  • Act as a liaison between custodial staff, building administration, and supervisors to address concerns and ensure operational goals are met.
  • Conduct regular shift check-ins to support staff, share best practices, and promote collaborative problem-solving across the team.
  • Build and maintain positive, professional working relationships with building administrators, staff, and community members during evening events and operations.

Asset Management & Supply Control

  • Audit supply inventory levels within facility closets.
  • Eliminate product waste by teaching proper chemical dilution ratios and product allotment guidelines.
  • Inspect equipment to ensure building staff are performing standard daily preventative maintenance (e.g., auto-scrubbers, buffers, vacuums) to extend operational lifespans.
  • Coordinate major equipment repair needs and train staff on mandatory pre- and post-use inspections of equipment.
  • Assist UPA and Building Engineers by assessing and reporting non-functional equipment when necessary.
  • Facilitate the transfer of spare equipment to buildings as needed to maintain seamless operational workflow.
  • Provide data-driven recommendations to the Custodial Supervisor regarding supply usage trends, equipment lifecycle management, and opportunities for cost reduction.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Custodial Supervisor.

QUALIFICATIONS

EXPERIENCE

35 years of progressive commercial or institutional custodial experience, with a proven track record of coaching or training personnel.

EDUCATION

High School Diploma or equivalent required.

TECHNICAL KNOWLEDGE

Proficient in institutional chemical safety, cleaning standards, and complex floor-care machinery operation and instructional demonstration techniques. Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) and Outlook for reporting and data management.
