The Crew Leader provides support and coaching to the crew to achieve production goals, identifies safety hazards and ensures compliance, and allocates and prioritizes work on the job site as directed by the General Foreperson.
EssentialJob Duties
- Adheres to and coaches employees on company policies, procedures, on‑the‑job safety practices, approved work methods, and OSHA regulations.
- Assists with conducting safety training, pre‑job briefings, and crew member assignments.
- Uses herbicide equipment to treat stumps and brush, maintains application records, and obtains necessary permissions from property owners.
- Coordinates with customers or property owners to gain access, explains work, and manages potential interruptions.
- Operates climbing equipment, powered trimmer lifts, safety belt, ladder, and other tools for tree removal or trimming.
- Conducts pre‑inspection of work area to identify hazards, loads vehicles, performs minor property repairs, and escalates issues to the General Foreperson.
- Promotes good customer and public relations through effective completion of assigned work and appropriate employee behavior.
- Maintains records and reports related to crew production: timesheets, work orders, units of work, man‑hours, crew assignments, and cost control.
- Obtains and interprets maps and drawings of power lines, voltages, and equipment, assists in assigning daily work orders.
- Sets up warning signs, barriers, flags, and directs traffic to protect employees and the public.
- Cooperates with property owners, customers, and emergency personnel when blocking streets or driveways.
- Stages and cleans up tools and equipment, maintains a neat work area, and performs vehicle and equipment inspections.
- Performs routine maintenance on company vehicles, equipment, and tools.
- Responds to emergencies or natural disasters, traveling outside the regular work location when necessary, and coordinates crew response.
- Complies with federal, state, and local laws, follows company policies, and maintains punctual attendance.
Drives and operates assigned vehicles and equipment.
Supervisory DutiesCoordinates and monitors crew activities.
Key Qualifications- Excellent leadership and multitasking skills; able to manage stressful situations.
- Knowledge of trees and arboricultural techniques, especially near energized conductors.
- Exceptional customer service and communication skills.
- Understanding of ANSI Z133.1 and ANSI A300 standards and OSHA electric power standards.
- Ability to read and interpret circuit maps, determine nominal voltage, use insulated tools near live parts, and distinguish exposed live parts.
- Strong written and verbal communication; ability to document and convey instructions accurately.
- Recognition of poisonous plants and safe handling.
- Willingness to work long hours, overtime, and call‑out work during emergencies.
- Knowledge of tree rescue operations and ability to operate required equipment.
- Valid First‑Aid and CPR cards (or ability to obtain within 90 days).
- Valid driver’s license or commercial driver’s license (CDL) and DOT medical card as required.
- Herbicide application certification or equivalent required by law.
Minimum 3 years of experience on tree trimming or clearing crews, or successful completion of required skills assessments. High School diploma or equivalent preferred but not required.
Physical and Environmental RequirementsPhysical demands include bending, reaching, standing, walking, climbing, lifting up to 100lb occasionally, and moving up to 50lb frequently. Must be able to operate in outdoor, rugged terrain, exposure to weather, noise, vibration, electrical hazards, chemicals, and narrow passageways.
Travel RequirementsExtensive travel (>50%) may be required.
