Overview
You must live within 45 minutes of Baton Rouge, LA to be eligible for this position. Deckhands build tows by handling lines and cables to tie/untie barges and boats. Deckhands also perform scheduled vessel maintenance for tools and equipment, and perform general housekeeping duties as assigned by their supervisor.
Responsibilities- Adhere to company safety policy and procedures, environmental rules, and governmental regulation.
- Work under the supervision of the Master or designate.
- The schedule is either 14 days on/7 days off or 20 days on/10 days off with 12‑hour shifts working days and nights.
- Attach and remove lines and cables to and from the vessel, barges, docks, and locks. This involves carrying coiled lines, ratchets, rigging, cables, or other equipment from line lockers, deck lockers, or fire‑fighting equipment and spill‑containment equipment.
- Use manual or power winches to tighten lines or cables and monitor and adjust lines and tension during towing, loading, discharging, locking, or docking.
- Untie and retie lines 4 to 8 times during loading and discharging to adjust for the changing height of the barge relative to other barges, the dock, and the vessel.
- Perform scheduled vessel maintenance and housekeeping duties such as sweeping, sanding, chipping rusted metal, priming, and painting.
- Make minor repairs such as tightening bolts, replacing fluid and air lines, hanging light bulbs, and replacing equipment such as cables, winches, pumps, and fan belts.
- Use tools such as hammers, fire axes, ratchets, hand winches, stripping pumps, needle guns, and grinders with two hands.
- Work in inclement weather outdoors, heat, and cold.
- Attend paid required training on and off scheduled work time.
- Have reliable transportation and be able to drive to and from vessel location.
- $207 per day, plus benefits (medical, dental, vision, 401(k), etc.).

- Valid driver’s license.
- No DWI or DUI in the last three years.
- No more than two moving‑drive violations in the last three years.
- Satisfy all United States Coast Guard physical requirements (CG‑719K) and 46 CFR Part 10.
- Satisfy all United States Coast Guard Chemical Drug Testing Programs for vessel personnel, 46 CFR Part 10.
- Satisfy all United States Coast Guard physical requirements.
- Pass company requirements of 46 CFR Part 197 Subpart C Benzene.
- Valid state‑issued birth certificate.
- Valid social security card.
- Must be 18 years of age or older.
- No pending criminal charges or probation.
- Meet standards of Criteria Skill Assessment (online).
- Read and write English; understand written and verbal orders.
- Must not be color blind.
- Walk: 2‑3 miles per day.
- Step: 2 ft vertical and 2 ft horizontal.
- Reach:
Extend arms fully throughout a normal range of motion both horizontally and vertically. - Climb: 90‑degree vertical ladder 25‑30 feet, carrying weight while climbing.
- Grip/Hold/Pull:
Pull 50 lbs. - Lift: 75 lbs.
- Lift & Carry: 50 lbs for approximately 350 ft.
- Vision:
Color vision and eyesight sufficient to pass an eye test (uncorrected 20/200, corrected to 20/40). - Hearing:
Minimum standards per USCG requirements. - Speech:
Verbal communication in English, understandable via handheld radios or other devices. - Smell:
Detect potentially dangerous vapors. - Pulmonary Functions:
Pass pulmonary function test with a minimum score of 75 %. - General:
Enter and exit hatches/doorways quickly in case of emergency. - Equipment:
Wear negative or positive pressure respirator, PVC foul weather gear, personal flotation device, rubber gloves, and boots. - Use firefighting/spill‑containment equipment.
