About the PositionAs a member of the General Services crew, the General Services Worker performs small campus moves, surplus furniture and equipment pick up and disposal, general loading dock clearing, furniture inventory maintenance, moving bulk items, providing support for special university functions, and other duties as assigned. On a daily basis the crew members may be called upon to perform a variety of tasks at any of the three GMU campuses.
Responsibilities- Daily Operations:
Perform a variety of tasks at any of the three GMU campuses, such as pickup and delivery of all types of equipment, furniture, storage, allocation, distribution, setup, assembly, making minor repairs, trash collection, grounds cleaning, recycling material collection, and general warehouse tasks. Other duties as may be assigned. Must be flexible and willing to work extra hours, including weekends, if required. - General Maintenance:
Assist the Lead General Services Worker in completing assigned tasks with scheduled work orders. Tasks include waste pick‑up and hauling, policing litter on off‑campus roads and university grounds, clearing/cleaning of loading docks, assisting with recycling and other warehousing operations, etc. - Other Duties as Assigned:
Maintain warehouse or facilities operations such as inclement weather duty, general service support to departments and university events, provide outstanding customer service, respond with appropriate urgency and flexibility, identify and initiate actions to support the mission and objectives, maintain high credibility, follow safety policies and procedures, identify and correct safety hazards, follow general university policies related to data stewardship and IT security, and safeguard sensitive and confidential data.
Hazards
- Work near moving mechanical parts; fumes, smoke, or airborne particles; hazardous materials; operate light/heavy equipment; outdoors environment; work in high places; operate power tools/machinery.
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- Must be able to become certified in forklift operation
- Must currently possess an appropriate, active, valid motor‑vehicle operator’s license that meets all of GMU’s requirements for operating state vehicles and equipment under Mason’s Vehicle Use Policy 1411. The Office of Risk Management reserves the right to review the driver’s licenses and Motor Vehicle Reports (MVRs) of all candidates selected with employment contingent upon a favorable review.
