Data Center Engineering Operations Technician - Northern Virginia
Amazon Data Services, Inc. seeks a hands-on Data Center Engineering Operations Technician to support the operation and maintenance of mission-critical data center infrastructure.
Responsibilities- Daily building rounds to monitor and record information from electrical, mechanical, and fire/life safety equipment to ensure 24/7 reliability and availability
- Monitor Building Management Systems (BMS) and Electrical Power Management System (EPMS)
- Assist in troubleshooting facility and rack-level events within internal Service Level Agreements (SLA)
- Perform rack installs and rack decommissioning within internal SLA
- Perform preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, root-cause analysis, and repair of electrical and mechanical equipment
- Prepare technical documentation to support the change management program
- Monitor daily work requests, manage to resolution, and execute projects from conception to completion
- Provide on-site support of contractors, sub-contractors and vendors, ensuring work is in accordance with established practices, procedures and local legislation
- Work schedule changes based on site needs. Shifts can be up to 12 hours and may rotate on a predefined schedule. Some locations have on-call rotations
- Role may support more than one location/site
Data Centers operate 24/7 and require on-site presence. Two shift schedule options are available:
- Option 1:
Weekend Rotation — Days Worked:
Sunday to Tuesday, plus every other Saturday;
Shift hours: 5:30am–6:00pm (day) or 5:30pm–6:00am (night) - Option 2:
Weekday Rotation — Days Worked:
Wednesday to Friday, plus every other Saturday;
Shift hours: 5:30am–6:00pm (day) or 5:30pm–6:00am (night)
Both schedules rotate to 3 days one week and 4 days the next.
Overtime & Pay- Overtime:
Time and a half after 40 hours per week - Night Shift Differential: 13% additional pay (6:00pm–6:00am shifts)

- Regularly lift and/or move up to 39 pounds independently; participate in group lifts for 40+ pounds
- Maintain balance and perform construction tasks while on a ladder
- Regularly walk, use hands and fingers, handle or feel, reach with hands and arms, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl, climb stairs, twist, bend, and grasp or carry objects into position
- Work in an environment requiring provided ear protection
This role acts as front-line support for hands-on electrical and mechanical equipment preventative maintenance (PM) and troubleshooting. Responsibilities include maintaining, operating, and troubleshooting mission-critical data center facility equipment, such as stand-by diesel generators, 3-phase electrical systems (switch gear, UPS, PDUs, wet cell batteries), and related systems; mechanical equipment including CRAHU units, centrifugal chillers, cooling towers, water systems, air handlers, pumps, and motors;
and support equipment including fire/life safety equipment, building automation systems, and general facilities equipment.

We support all AWS data centers and the servers, storage, networking, power, and cooling equipment that ensure continual access to our cloud services. We work on challenging problems and collaborate across AWS to deliver safety, security, and scalable infrastructure.
Basic Qualifications- Work shifts longer than eight hours in duration
- 2+ years of practical experience in electrical systems, mechanical systems, HVAC, and/or fire suppression systems
- Ability to bend or twist into unusual positions, manipulate small wires and objects, walk on uneven terrain, and work at heights and from ladders
- Knowledge of network design and layout as well as low voltage (copper/fiber) cabling
- Experience in data center engineering

The base salary range for this position is listed below. Your Amazon package may include sign-on payments and RSUs. Final compensation will be determined based on experience, qualifications, and location.
