Custodian III – 261 Days

Location:

Charles Town, West Virginia. Position is a full‑time, non‑exempt, 261‑day annual term.

Immediate Supervisor

Building Principal / Supervisor of Facility.

Responsibilities
  • Maintain regular attendance.
  • Cleans and preserves designated spaces, equipment, and facilities.
  • Clean classrooms, offices, libraries, restrooms, and common areas (chalkboards, dusting, trash removal, vacuuming, window washing).
  • Scrub, mop, disinfect, and polish floors as required.
  • Perform minor maintenance and repairs, including plumbing, electrical, and painting.
  • Secure the building after hours: lock doors, shut lights, and remove keys.
  • Maintain an inventory of supplies and equipment; notify the head custodian of needs.
  • Comply with County Policies and safety regulations.
  • Communicate, read, write, and follow written and oral instructions.
  • Operate custodial equipment such as buffers, rug cleaners, vacuums, and floor strippers.
  • Work from ladders or scaffolds; perform heavy and strenuous physical activity.
  • Take work over 40 hours per week only with supervisor approval.
  • Assist in special events, move furniture, and support presentations.
  • Identify and correct safety hazards, reporting to the building supervisor.
  • Maintain confidentiality and professional conduct.
  • When serving as head custodian, assign tasks and review work areas of staff.
  • Work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Complete required training and in‑service sessions.
  • Perform any other duties assigned.
Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Legal employment status in the United States; citizenship, residency, or work visa required.
  • Demonstrated competency in custodial skills; may require state‑approved competency tests.
  • Strong ability to multi‑task, work independently, and follow directions.
  • Physical ability to lift and move up to 75 pounds and work outdoors at temperatures ranging from below freezing to over 90°F.
  • Good health, dexterity, and physical strength for laborious tasks.
  • Understanding of safety warnings and labels on cleaning agents.
  • Ability to communicate clearly, write reports, and maintain professional relationships.
  • Background check under WV Code §18‑5‑15c.
  • References and satisfactory background check required.
Physical / Environmental Requirements

Work may involve mopping, stripping floors, and snow removal on slippery surfaces. Noise levels range from 60‑90 dB, and temperatures may vary from below freezing to 90°F.
