Overnight Custodian

The University of Virginia Facilities Management Department offers a career with exciting growth opportunities for employees. We are currently hiring overnight custodians to work the following shift:

• Sunday – Thursday, 11:00 pm – 7:30 am (starting Sunday night, ending Friday morning)

Position compensation starts at $15.00 per hour, plus an additional $2.50 per hour for the evening shift differential. This is a full‑time, non‑exempt position with UVA benefits.

Custodians perform exceptional housekeeping services in assigned areas, maintaining cleanliness, and ensuring safe work practices.

Responsibilities include:

• Maintain offices, classrooms, restrooms, and public areas in a clean and orderly condition
• Remove trash, clean bathrooms, wipe down surfaces, dust, vacuum, and apply proper methods and materials
• Keep housekeeping closets and equipment clean, maintain inventories of supplies, and request additional supplies as needed
• Report all repairs, pest control needs, and any housekeeping‑related violations to supervisors
• Perform minor maintenance tasks such as changing light bulbs, and operate cleaning equipment such as buffers or waxers
• Other duties may be assigned as needed

Minimum qualifications:

None required. Basic housekeeping experience (dusting, vacuuming, mopping, cleaning carpets and bathrooms, trash removal) is preferred. Ability to follow policies and procedures, work safely, communicate effectively (written, verbal, interpersonal), and use basic computer/tablet/smartphone technology for electronic timesheets is required.

Preferred qualifications:

Some experience with basic housekeeping duties in a workplace setting.

Physical demands:
Regular standing, walking, bending, squatting, kneeling, lifting, and carrying as much as 25‑40 pounds; repetitive motion such as dusting and mopping; work in various indoor and outdoor environments.

Location:

Charlottesville, VA – the position must be performed fully on‑site.
