Summary

The Custodian is responsible for maintaining an attractive, sanitary, and safe facility for students, staff, and the public. The custodian also provides equipment and furniture for meetings, classroom activities, and events, and works to minimize property damage, loss, and liability.

Essential Functions
  • Arrange and assemble equipment and furnishings to support meetings, classroom activities, and events.
  • Assist other personnel to ensure an efficient work environment.
  • Attend trainings (blood borne pathogens, cleaning solvents, floor care, first aid, etc.) to learn new or improved procedures.
  • Clean assigned facilities (offices, restrooms, corridors, carpets, windows, walls, boardroom and conference areas) to maintain a sanitary, safe, and attractive environment.
  • Communicate safety and maintenance issues to supervisors, staff, and students to secure repairs and schedule special cleaning.
  • Deliver supplies and equipment to appropriate parties.
  • Inform personnel about procedures and work-order status to support decision making and health and safety compliance.
  • Inspect school or division facilities to verify suitability for safe operations and identify necessary repairs from vandalism, equipment breakage, weather, etc.
  • Maintain supplies and equipment (cleaning solutions, paper products, vacuums, mops, etc.) to ensure availability.
  • Perform minor maintenance and repairs (change light bulbs, replace washers, oil doors, etc.) for safe and efficient facility use.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
  • Prepare facilities for daily operations (open gates, disarm security systems, raise flag, perform minor repairs, etc.) to ensure operational and safe occupancy.
  • Repair furniture and equipment (faucets, toilets, lights, etc.) to keep items functional.
  • Respond to immediate safety or operational concerns (facility damage, injured or ill students, unauthorized persons, alarms, etc.) to resolve issues promptly.
  • Secure facilities and grounds (lock doors, turn off lights, take down flags, etc.) to minimize property damage, loss, and liability.
Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities

Perform multiple non-technical tasks, upgrade skills as needed; operate industrial maintenance equipment, electrical cleaning equipment, and common tools; adhere to safety practices; basic math skills (fractions, percents, ratios); excellent written and oral communication; read and understand routine documents; follow multistep instructions; knowledge of industrial cleaning methods; schedule activities; handle data with defined processes; problem solve to identify issues and create action plans;

adapt to changing priorities; work effectively with teams and diverse groups.

Education and Experience

High school diploma or equivalent is required. Prior job-related experience is preferred.

Physical Conditions and Nature of Work

Significant lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling; some climbing and balancing; frequent stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling; requires fine finger dexterity. Job requires 10% sitting, 30% walking, and 60% standing. Work is performed under minimal temperature variations and some hazardous conditions.

Evaluation

The Custodian is evaluated by the Division Head Custodian and building administration.

Contract Length

12 months / 260 days.
