Maintenance Technician / Mechanic
The Aquatic Maintenance Specialist performs responsible routine specialized work providing maintenance and upkeep for all City Aquatics facilities by performing daily maintenance, identifying and troubleshooting mechanical and water quality issues and implementing solutions to fix. Work is performed under the general supervision of an Aquatic Maintenance Supervisor.
The preferred hiring amount for this position is between $23.89 - $29.36 an hour ($49,691.20 - $61,068.80 annually), in accordance with the Labor & Trades Collective Bargaining Agreement.

- Choice of retirement plan:
- Defined Benefit Pension Plan:Provides a monthly benefit upon retirement, calculated using a defined formula based on earnings history, years of service, and age. The plan includes a 5-year vesting period and requires an employee contribution of 5% of salary.
- Defined Contribution 401a Plan:Employer makes fixed contributions to an individual account, which are invested, and returns are credited to the account. The account balance is used to provide retirement benefits. Vesting occurs at 33% after one year, 67% after two years, and 100% after three years of service. No salary contribution is required.
- Voluntary 457 Deferred Compensation Plan
- Eligibility to purchase prior service credit under the Defined Benefit Plan
The City of Charlottesville manages its own retirement system and does not participate in VRS; however, a Portability Agreement is available for eligible employees.

- Performs maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of aquatic facilities.
- Performs preventative maintenance for pools and spray grounds; assesses issues and concerns as they arise; provides recommendations to supervisors as needed based on observations.
- Prepares spray grounds and pools for opening, by removing leaves, cleaning filters and strainer baskets, cleaning spray features, adjusting water chemistry and chemical controllers.
- Checks pools and spray pads throughout the day to determine maintenance needs, such as adjustments to water chemistry or need for backwash.
- Ensures appropriate chemicals are available and used safely, properly, and responsibly. monitors conditions to determine, evaluate, and mitigate risks, and maximize efficacy of chemical use.
- Maintains accurate physical and electronic/digital logs for each splash pad and pool. Keeps specialized work records and prepares reports.
- Provides guidance and technical assistance to co-workers.
- Tracks inventory to ensure necessary chemicals, supplies, tools and equipment are available. Responsible for the storage, application, disposal, documentation and recordkeeping of chemicals/hazardous materials.
- Completes work according to maintenance standards and checklists, and reports issues to supervisor to ensure proper operations and/or adherence of safety regulations and implements corrective measures.
- Performs basic equipment maintenance and repairs to pool and spray ground facilities, using appropriate power and hand tools.
- Operates vehicle in the performance of duties and ensures proper care in the use and upkeep of assigned equipment.
- Responds to applicable work orders or requests from the public and staff; interacts effectively and professionally.
