Work Hours: Monday – Friday, 7:00 A.M. – 3:30 P.M. (EST)

Department: Public Works – Stormwater Maintenance
Series Level: The City Laborer is a stand-alone classification in the Department of Public Works.
Essential Functions- Perform public works duties such as sweeping sidewalks and streets, blowing and raking leaves, and collecting/picking up brush, garbage and recycling materials.
- Participate in seasonal work such as ice and snow removal.
- Operate leaf blowers and other equipment to remove leaves from structures and landscapes, sweep sidewalks and entryways.
- Store scrap metal, deliver and retrieve vehicles from privately operated shops, pick up parts, supplies and mail.
- Clean and maintain City facilities, buildings and landscapes including restrooms, floors, carpets, windows, and trash/litter removal.
- Operate hand and power tools requiring no special training, and perform minor equipment maintenance.
- Use a cell phone as determined by job duties and the department head.
- Maintain regular attendance and good interpersonal relationships with staff, co-workers, managers and citizens.
- Accomplish job functions in a timely manner, with or without reasonable accommodations.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Remain at or report to work during inclement weather, even during administrative closings, as directed by the Department Head.
Specific Duties (if any)
- Set up and break down tables and chairs for scheduled meetings when working in Facilities.
- Maintain dumpster enclosures.
Work requires the ability to read and understand written instructions, to understand simple processes, and to operate power tools and/or small maintenance equipment/machines. High School Diploma or GED preferred but not required; equivalent experience and education may substitute.
Licensing and Certifications- Valid driver's license may be required depending on assignment.
Knowledge of construction, grounds or building maintenance principles and practices; equipment, materials and tools used in maintenance activities; safe work practices. Skill in following oral and written instructions; performing routine maintenance and construction tasks; operating and maintaining maintenance equipment and tools; and communication and interpersonal skills with coworkers, supervisors and the public.
Physical DemandsPositions in this class typically require climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions.
Work EnvironmentMedium work:
Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds frequently, and up to 10 pounds constantly. Incumbents may be exposed to moving mechanical parts, electrical currents, vibrations, fumes, odors, dusts, gases, chemicals, oils, extreme temperatures, inadequate lighting, work space restrictions, intense noise, and travel.
