Position: City Laborer - SSA Street Maintenance

Position Overview

Salary: $16.39 - $19.80 Hourly (GS.03N)

Work Hours: Monday – Friday, 7:00 A.M. – 3:30 P.M. (EST)
Note: Hours may vary due to work assignments or projects.

Work Location: Paul Clark Building, 900 East 11th Street

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Department: Public Works - CWS SSA Street Maintenance

Classification

Summary:

Incumbents in this classification perform miscellaneous labor in the Department of Public Works under close supervision. Most tasks are routine and require minimal oversight.

Essential Functions
  • Perform assorted public works duties such as sweeping sidewalks and streets, blowing, raking leaves, and collecting brush, garbage, and recycling materials.
  • Participate in seasonal work including ice and snow removal.
  • Operate leaf blowers to remove leaves from various structures and landscapes, sweep sidewalks and entryways.
  • Stow scrap metal, deliver and retrieve vehicles from privately operated shops, and pick up parts, supplies, and mail.
  • Clean and maintain city facilities, buildings, and landscapes, including cleaning restrooms, sweeping and mopping flooring, vacuuming, carpet cleaning, operating specialized cleaning equipment, washing windows, removing trash, litter, and collecting recycle.
  • Operate hand and power tools requiring no special training, maintain minor equipment.
  • Use cell phone as determined by job duties and department head.
  • Meet regular attendance requirements and maintain good interpersonal relationships with staff, co-workers, managers, and citizens.
  • Accomplish essential functions in a timely manner with or without reasonable accommodations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Report to or remain at work during inclement weather, including administrative closings, as directed by the Department Head.

  • Set up and break down tables and chairs for scheduled meetings.
  • Maintain dumpster enclosures.
Minimum Qualifications

High School Diploma or GED preferred, but not required. Any combination of equivalent experience and education acceptable. Ability to read and understand written instructions, understand simple processes, and operate power tools or small maintenance equipment.

Licensing and Certifications

Valid driver's license may be required depending on assignment.

Knowledge and Skills

Knowledge of construction, grounds, or building maintenance principles and practices; applicable equipment, materials, and tools used in construction, grounds, or building maintenance activities and safe work practices. Ability to follow oral and written instructions, perform routine maintenance and construction tasks, operate and maintain applicable construction, grounds, and building maintenance equipment and tools, and communicate effectively with coworkers, supervisors, and the public.

Demands

Climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, speaking, hearing, seeing, and repetitive motions. Typical lifting upper limit 50 pounds occasionally, 20 pounds frequently, 10 pounds constantly.

Work Environment Varied by Assignment

Medium Work:
Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally or 20 pounds frequently or 10 pounds constantly to move objects. May be exposed to moving mechanical parts, electrical currents, vibrations, fumes, odors, dust, gases, poor ventilation, chemicals, oils, extreme temperatures, inadequate lighting, limited work space, intense noise, and travel.
