Crew Worker - CWS Street Maint & Operations

Location:

Paul

F. Clark Building, Chattanooga, TN (On-site).

Salary: $18.09 - $21.85 per hour (GS.05N).

Hours may vary due to assignments or shift.

Responsibilities
  • Perform public works duties such as sweeping sidewalks and streets, blowing and raking leaves, collecting/picking up brush, garbage and recycling materials.
  • Assist with placement of caution signs for motorists and pedestrians along rights‑of‑way and with traffic direction and control around worksite.
  • Participate in seasonal work such as ice and snow removal.
  • Assist or perform repair work on vehicles including replacing damaged parts, mixing paints, and maintaining fleet operations (operate truck wash, empty trash containers, sweep and mop floors, clean restrooms, repair flat tires, stow scrap metal, deliver vehicles).
  • Assist in the upkeep of golf courses (aerifying and mowing greens, fairways and tees, racking sand traps, hand‑watering greens, changing pin locations).
  • Clean and maintain City facilities, buildings and landscapes (clean restrooms, sweep, mop, vacuum, carpet clean, operate specialized cleaning equipment, wash windows, remove trash and litter, mow grass, operate leaf blower, weed, mulch, trim plants/shrubbery).
  • Assist with construction activities such as drainage and road/paving operations.
  • Operate hand and power tools requiring no special training or skill.
  • Drive a vehicle when required and use cell phone as determined by job duties.
  • Remove spray paint from signs, buildings and sidewalks, and deliver and pick up recycle and landfill containers for special events.
  • Handle animal disposal, tire crushing, traffic control flagging, and sign shop assistance.
  • Answer city emergency calls for 911 dispatch, 311 call center and other calls.
  • Ensure regular attendance and maintain good interpersonal relationships with staff, co‑workers, managers and citizens.
  • Maintain ability to accomplish essential functions with or without reasonable accommodations in a timely manner.
  • May be assigned or reassigned within the Public Works department.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Position is essential during inclement weather and must report or remain at work even during administrative closings.
Minimum Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or GED preferred but not required.
  • Ability to read and understand written instructions, simple processes and routine operation of power tools and small maintenance equipment.
Licensing and Certifications

Valid driver's license may be required depending on assignment.

Knowledge and Skills
  • Knowledge of construction, grounds or building maintenance principles and practices; applicable equipment, materials and tools; safe work practices.
  • Skill in following oral and written instructions; performing routine maintenance and construction tasks; operating and maintaining applicable equipment; communication and interpersonal skills for interaction with coworkers, supervisors and the public.
Physical Demands

Positions in this class typically require climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, and repetitive motions. Requires ability to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, 20 pounds frequently and 10 pounds constantly.

Work Environment

Medium work environment with exposure to moving mechanical parts, electrical currents, vibrations, fumes, odors, dusts, gases, chemicals, oils, extreme temperatures, inadequate lighting, work‑space restrictions, intense noise, and travel.
