Maintenance Superintendent - Chattanooga, TN

Position Summary:

The Maintenance Superintendent has overall responsibility for the material condition of the facility and all assets. In this dual reporting role, the Superintendent reports to the Plant Manager for day‑to‑day execution and to the RCM Regional Manager for technical direction and asset strategy. The focus is to maximize production time, minimize upkeep costs, and manage expenditures related to equipment, spare parts, and consumables.

The role supports plant production by providing high‑quality repair and maintenance services that enable the plant to meet production goals. Core activities include operational effectiveness, continuous improvement, proactive and precision maintenance, planning and scheduling, contractor and vendor management, implementation of best practices and programs, and training and development.

Job Responsibilities
  • Proactively ensures that all employees, visitors, vendors and contractors understand and comply with safety policies and procedures.
  • Sets goals and expectations for the maintenance team.
  • Supports and engages in performance excellence activities.
  • Supports the production departments in safety and quality, including audit compliance.
  • Aligns, deploys and executes the maintenance and reliability vision and strategy.
  • Maintains production equipment to function as designed or expected.
  • Manages and implements preventative maintenance and reliability activities.
  • Works with plant leadership and the RCM CoE to develop the maintenance budget and manage monthly spending.
  • Leads and supports root‑cause analysis processes within the maintenance team regarding failures and implementation of countermeasures.
  • Develops, reviews, and analyzes maintenance/reliability metrics and performance.
  • Assists production leadership in training operations personnel on proper operations, cleaning, lubrication, troubleshooting, and adjustments on the production equipment.
  • Drives effectiveness of the storeroom and spare parts inventory to ensure needed parts are available.
  • Coordinates the maintenance program to schedule work with or around the production schedule.
  • Maintains an effective equipment history, work history, and preventative maintenance program using a computerized maintenance management system (CMMS) and ensures all maintenance work is documented.
  • Manages ongoing maintenance and reliability related projects (asset reliability and defect elimination).
  • Is responsible for people management and development, including retention, recruiting, and team engagement.
  • Identifies training opportunities, needs and facilitates training sessions for maintenance personnel, focusing on precision skills training and development, safety practices and work standards; may provide ad‑hoc technical support as needed.
  • Takes an active role in managing the maintenance team and coaching employees to reach their fullest potential through effective, consistent and fair feedback.
Job Requirements
  • A recognized engineering qualification with experience in electrical and mechanical engineering, or a degree in mechanical or electrical engineering, production manufacturing, or a related field.
  • Experience and leadership in reliability centered maintenance processes.
  • Strong experience preferably in a food, feed or chemical production environment.
  • Strong experience in managing or supervising a maintenance department that incorporates safety & health, environmental, quality, production and project management.
  • Proficiency in asset management techniques.
  • Good knowledge of Microsoft applications and asset management software.
  • Strong problem‑solving, diagnostic and analytical skills with a results‑focused approach.
  • Strong communication skills and an excellent team player.
  • Thorough knowledge of machinery, with prior experience in instrumentation and electrical equipment.
  • Ability to move throughout the facility, including climbing stairs and ladders, and working at heights.
  • Work is performed indoors and outdoors year‑round, occasionally in environments that are dusty, noisy, or which could have work hazards.
