Substitute Custodian

Position type:
Classified, Substitute. Work schedule is variable by day and start/end times, Sunday–Friday, during the school year.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Provides routine cleaning, maintenance and refinishing of hard floor surfaces such as vinyl tile, VAT/VCT, Terrazzo, aggregate, synthetic or maple floors.
  • Vacuum, spot clean, maintain and repair carpet and walk‑off mats, including periodic extraction, shampooing and treatment of carpet as assigned.
  • Provides routine cleaning and sanitation of restrooms, shower rooms, kitchens, cafeterias, classroom sinks, staff lounges and concession areas. Includes counters, partitions, dispensers, cupboards, sinks, lavatory fixtures, faucets, drinking fountains, showers, mirrors, walls, floors, ceilings, writing boards and light fixtures. Replaces tissue, towel and soap dispensers and cleans and sanitizes drinking fountains as assigned.
  • Provides routine cleaning, dusting and maintenance of assigned classrooms, offices, health rooms, corridors, mechanical rooms, access areas and other assigned areas. Includes lights, fixtures, white boards, furnishings, waste containers, walls, floors, ceilings, windows, doors, etc.
  • Sets up and removes furniture for special events, monitors and replenishes supplies, reports damage and other concerns.
  • Cleans and maintains classroom and office furniture. Repairs desk and chair tops, seats, backs and floor glides; moves and relocates desks, chairs, risers and other furniture as assigned; performs minor repairs as needed.
  • Uses a variety of hand and power tools such as brooms, mops, squeegees, brushes and related custodial equipment. Operates and maintains mechanized equipment such as carpet extractors, shampoo equipment, buffers, vacuums and pressure washers.
  • Provides site security through visual and physical inspection of doors, windows and hatches; reports defective equipment immediately.
  • Assists in periodic replacement of heating and ventilation filters and visual inspection of belts; reports defective equipment immediately.
  • Applies floor strippers, disinfectants, finishes, cleaning chemicals and treatments safely. Reads and follows manufacturer’s directions for application and use of chemicals and other products.
  • Inspects playgrounds, parking lots, reports safety concerns, and services refuse containers outside the building.
  • Maintains exterior walkways, keeping them clear of snow, ice and debris.
Qualifications and Abilities
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid Washington State driver’s license.
  • Physical ability to perform required work, including lifting up to 50 pounds at intermittent times.
  • Knowledge and ability to use the tools of the trade and operate and maintain power equipment.
  • Ability to follow written and oral directions.
  • Basic computer (e‑mail, Internet) skills preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to relate well with students, staff and the public.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a team setting.
  • Testing may be used to determine knowledge of the trade.
Compensation

Hourly pay: $21.37‑$22.97 (depending on position). Substitute hours are paid the month following when the work is completed.

Degree enhancement: AA $0.50/hour, BA $1.00/hour, MA $1.50/hour, PhD $2.00/hour (highest stipend applied).

Benefits

Upon reaching 630 hours worked, substitutes become eligible for medical, dental, vision, and basic life and AD&D insurance through SEBB.
