Custodian I – Night Shift
SCHEDULE: 8 hours per day; 2:30 p.m. – 6:30 p.m. & 7:00 p.m. – 11:00 p.m.;
Monday–Friday; 260 days (year‑round). School‑year assignment at Salnave/Betz; summer assignment directed by supervisor.

POSITION TYPE: Classified, Ongoing
COMPENSATION: $21.37–$26.17 per hour (annualized over 12 months). Degree-dependent salary enhancements: AA $0.50/hr, BA $1.00/hr, MA $1.50/hr, PhD $2.00/hr.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION: Performs general housekeeping and cleaning duties in assigned areas, follows direction from building administrator(s) or department director(s), interacts with students, staff and public, monitors building for health and safety, maintains security, reports maintenance and safety concerns.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Routine cleaning, maintenance and refinishing of hard floor surfaces; vacuuming, spot cleaning, maintenance and repair of carpet and walkway mats including periodic extraction, shampooing, and treatment.
- Cleaning and sanitation of restrooms, shower rooms, kitchens, cafeterias, classroom sinks, staff lounges and concession areas (including counters, partitions, dispensers, cupboards, sinks, lavatory fixtures, faucets, drinking fountains, showers, mirrors, walls, floors, ceilings, writing boards, light fixtures, etc.), filling or replacing tissue, towel and soap dispensers.
- Replace and maintain light fixtures; practice proper recycling and/or destruction of bulbs.
- Cleaning, dusting and maintenance of assigned classrooms, offices, health rooms, corridors, mechanical rooms, access areas (lights, fixtures, white boards, furnishings, waste containers, walls, floors, ceilings, windows, doors, etc.).
- Setup and removal of furniture for special events; replenish supplies.
- Maintain classroom and office furniture; repair furniture where necessary; relocate furniture as assigned.
- Maintain all custodial equipment after use; perform minor repairs.
- Operate wide variety of hand and power tools, including brooms, mops, scooters, brushes, carpet extractors, shampoo equipment, buffers, vacuums, pressure washers, etc.
- Provide site security through visual inspection of doors, windows, hatches.
- Assist in periodic replacement of heating and ventilation filters; inspect belts; order replacement filters as needed.
- Report defective and damaged equipment.
- Apply floor strippers, disinfectants, finishes, cleaning chemicals safely; follow manufacturer’s instructions.
- Inspect playgrounds, parking lots; report safety concerns.
- Service refuse containers outside the building.
- Maintain exterior walkways; keep clear of snow, ice, debris.
- On‑call for snow removal during winter; respond to emergencies.
- Use industrial chemicals, solvents and cleaners in compliance with OSHA/WISHA.
- Support furniture moving; build and repair furniture and warehouse surplus items.
- Participate as contributing member of maintenance and operations team.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- High school diploma or equivalent with related work experience.
- Valid Washington State driver’s license.
- Reliable transportation.
- Basic computer skills (Google Workspace, MS Windows, Word).
- Previous custodial experience preferred.
- WSP/FBI criminal history background clearance.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
- Lift up to 50 pounds repeatedly; occasionally up to 75 pounds.
- Work at heights up to 30 feet.
- Work in confined spaces, stand for extended periods.
- Spending roughly 20% crouching, 40% walking, 40% standing; perform repetitive grasping, fine finger dexterity, bending, twisting, reaching, lifting overhead.
