The Pool and Facilities Technician is a key member of the Parks, Recreation and Tourism aquatic team, responsible for maintaining and repairing indoor and outdoor aquatic systems. This role ensures safe, efficient operations and full compliance with health and safety regulations while supporting maintenance needs across other City facilities.

In this role, the Facilities Maintenance Technician works with pumps, motors, filtration systems, and chemical feeders, performing inspections, preventive maintenance, and repairs to keep facilities operating at peak performance and in compliance with Virginia Department of Health standards.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Provide excellent customer service by responding to service requests and supporting the City's Customer Service Initiative.
  • Perform routine water testing, adjust chemical feeders, and safely handle chemicals to maintain proper water balance and compliance with Virginia Department of Health standards.
  • Inspect, diagnose, troubleshoot, and repair aquatic systems and equipment, including pumps, motors, filters, heaters, and chemical feed systems; perform preventive maintenance and routine cleaning tasks such as backwashing, vacuuming, and debris removal.
  • Identify maintenance needs and complete general repairs across facilities, including painting, carpentry, minor electrical work, and upkeep of decks, fencing, signage, and amenities.
  • Coordinate with vendors, contractors, and internal staff; process requisitions and quotes; and inspect completed work for quality and compliance.
  • Estimate, order, and maintain inventory of materials, supplies, tools, and equipment; provide technical input and assist with interpreting plans and drawings.
  • Maintain accurate records of water testing, chemical usage, maintenance activities, and compliance; complete basic administrative tasks including data entry and reporting.
  • Respond to safety hazards, incidents, emergencies, and inclement weather events while following proper safety, chemical handling, storage, and PPE protocols.
  • Support maintenance of parks and other City facilities, including grounds, playgrounds, trails, shelters, restrooms, locker rooms, and bathhouses; assist with trash and debris removal.
  • Assist with setup and breakdown of recreational programs and citywide special events.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications
VOCATIONAL / EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENT : Requires high school diploma or GED and any combination of education and experience equivalent to satisfactory completion of one year of college education in a construction or maintenance trade, or a closely related field.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT :
In addition to satisfying the vocational/education standards, this class requires a minimum of one year of related, full-time equivalent experience.

SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES : Requires a valid driver's license and a driving record that is in compliance with City Driving Standards .

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT :
Performance of essential functions may require exposure to confined spaces. Employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies. Emergency operations support work and work locations may be outside of normal job duties.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Previous experience in general facility maintenance, and repair work or other related fields.
  • Knowledge of aquatic and facility operations, aquatic related mechanical and hydraulic systems. Chemical handling and safety standards.
  • One (1) year experience in commercial or municipal and aquatic facility operations. One (1) year experience with splash pads and water play features
  • Knowledge and understanding of Model Aquatic Health Code ( MAHC )
  • Customer service experience and basic computer skills.
