Equipment Operator II – Landscaping
Chesapeake Parks, Recreation, and Tourism is seeking a skilled Equipment Operator II to support the maintenance and enhancement of the City’s parks, athletic fields, and public green spaces.
Key Responsibilities- Operate and maintain equipment such as dump trucks, front‑end loaders, backhoes, tractors with attachments, specialized mowers, top dressers, and small graders.
- Perform landscaping and grounds maintenance including grading, digging, mowing, trimming, planting, fertilizing, pruning, and mulching.
- Support athletic field preparation, renovation, and upkeep.
- Remove trees, stumps, roots, debris and dead vegetation as needed.
- Identify and report minor equipment maintenance needs; assist with repairs, construction, inspections, and maintenance of park amenities, facilities, signage, walkways, roads and parking areas.
- Conduct safety inspections of parks, recreational facilities, sidewalks and event sites to ensure timely repairs.
- Provide custodial duties such as litter and trash removal and restroom cleaning and stocking.
- Support event preparation and logistics, including setup and breakdown of tents, barricades and recreational equipment.
- Deliver responsive customer service in alignment with the City’s Customer Service Initiative.
- Collaborate with city departments, contractors, volunteer groups and community partners.
- Monitor contractor work to ensure compliance with specifications and standards.
- High school diploma or GED; high school completion is required.
- Minimum six months of related full‑time equivalent experience.
- Valid driver’s license in compliance with City driving standards.
- Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Class A (required).
- Pesticide Applicator Certification within one year of employment.
- Drug screening for marijuana (including medical marijuana certification if applicable).
- Ability to work overtime, evenings, weekends and holidays as needed.
- Certification for operating medium to heavy equipment.
- Good written and oral communication skills.
- Basic computer and email proficiency.
- Customer service experience.
- Knowledge of basic construction guidelines and principles.
- Existing Pesticide Applicator Certification.
Sign‑on bonus up to $3,000 and an annual CDL stipend up to $4,000.
Schedule:
Monday–Friday, 7 am to 3:30 pm; occasional evenings, weekends and holidays.
Pay: $48,170 annually; salary based on qualifications and experience.
Work Site:
Chesapeake, VA (various recreational and park facilities).
