Duneland School Corporation Substitute Custodian
A Duneland School Corporation substitute custodian is required to clean and sanitize all corporation facilities in a safe and lawful manner. This position has a highly responsible role in providing custodial services and dealing with students and staff on a regular basis. Substitute custodians interact with individuals both inside and outside the corporation and therefore, must have the ability to present a professional and organized image at all times.
Substitute custodians may be required to work in other Duneland School Corporation facilities.
Minimum qualifications include a high school diploma or general education degree (GED); or one to three months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Principal responsibilities and duties include:
- Responding to requests for information and services in a prompt, efficient and friendly manner
- Providing exceptional service to students, teachers, co-workers, other staff members, school visitors and members of the community
- Observing safety and security procedures
- Operating, maintaining and sanitizing equipment in compliance with local, state, federal and OSHA standards
- Shampooing carpets and providing gym floor maintenance
- Locker repair
- Providing minor building maintenance and repair
- Assisting with snow removal
- Participating in group and independent training
- Setting up, monitoring and providing service for special events arranged with the Duneland School Corporation
- Accepting delegated authority
- Promoting a positive and productive work environment
- Required to work at other Duneland School Corporation facilities as needed
- Performing other duties as assigned by immediate supervisor
- Demonstrating interpersonal skills necessary to deal tactfully and effectively with persons at all levels in order to develop and maintain productive relationships both inside and outside the corporation
- Ability to learn new skills quickly and assimilate into daily work
- Ability to maintain high level of confidentiality both inside and outside the corporation
- Ability to work independently and in a team environment

- Proficient in the use of all custodial services equipment
- Demonstrating organizational and time management skills

- Ability to remain calm and professional during times of high stress
- Ability to read and interpret safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions
- Must be able to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure
- Required to maintain a working knowledge of all Custodial Services equipment and have a basic knowledge of operating computers, printers, telephone systems, fax machines and copiers
- Work environment:
Typically work in a controlled temperature environment with occasional exposure to inclement weather conditions depending upon assignments - Hours:
A custodian is expected to work eight hours per day with a thirty minute lunch period. Summer hours may be adjusted as per the Superintendent. Substitute custodians may be scheduled and are expected to work their assigned schedule which may include weekends or holidays. - Physical demands:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle or feel; reach with hands and arms; talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to sit;
climb or balance; stoop, kneel, twist, crouch, crawl; and taste or smell. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
