About the Opportunity
A privately held, Chicago‑based organization is seeking a Project Accounting Manager to oversee job‑based accounting and financial operations for a growing portfolio of active projects. This is a hands‑on role supporting ownership and operational leadership, ideal for someone who enjoys managing the financial details behind complex, service‑driven work.
This position is fully on‑site and offers high visibility, autonomy, and the opportunity to own project accounting processes end‑to‑end within a stable, close‑knit environment.
What You’ll Be Responsible For- Own project‑level accounting activities, including job costing, billing, and margin tracking
- Manage cash flow forecasting and working capital needs tied to active projects
- Oversee Accounts Payable and Accounts Receivable processes, ensuring accuracy and timeliness
- Review contracts, renewals, and project documentation for financial and compliance alignment
- Partner closely with leadership to provide clear financial reporting and insights
- Coordinate payroll reporting and related filings
- Track fixed assets, equipment purchases, and vendor relationships
- Support internal operations across accounting, systems, and administrative functions
- Liaise with external providers such as insurance brokers, benefit administrators, and advisors
- Assist with process improvements, documentation, and internal controls as the business evolves
- 5+ years of progressive accounting experience in a project‑based or services environment
- Strong job costing, cash flow management, and project billing experience
- Hands‑on experience with Quick Books or similar accounting systems
- Comfortable working directly with ownership or senior leadership
- Detail‑oriented, organized, and able to manage multiple priorities
- Strong communication skills and a collaborative working style
- Experience wearing multiple hats in a small or mid‑sized organization preferred
