Audit Senior

Position Overview
The Audit Senior is responsible for leading and executing financial statement audits and compliance engagements, with a primary focus on employee benefit plans (EBP) and ERISA-regulated clients. This role oversees audit fieldwork, mentors and develops staff, ensures audit quality and regulatory compliance, and serves as a key client contact. The Audit Senior plays a critical role in delivering timely, accurate audit opinions and actionable recommendations within a public accounting environment.

Key Responsibilities

Audit Execution and Technical Responsibilities
  • Plan, direct, and execute audit engagements for employee benefit plans and ERISA-covered entities in accordance with GAAS, GAAP, ERISA, and applicable regulatory requirements
  • Perform risk assessments and design audit procedures responsive to client operations, internal controls, and industry-specific risks
  • Conduct substantive testing, control testing, and analytical procedures; document results and conclusions
  • Evaluate internal controls, identify deficiencies, and communicate findings clearly and effectively
Supervision and Staff Development
  • Supervise and train audit staff and junior auditors during fieldwork
  • Assign and manage work responsibilities to ensure efficiency and quality
  • Review work papers and provide timely, constructive feedback to support professional development
Reporting and Client Communication
  • Prepare and review audit documentation, financial statements, and footnote disclosures to ensure accuracy and compliance with reporting requirements
  • Communicate audit progress, findings, and recommendations to clients in a clear and professional manner
  • Coordinate with managers and partners to resolve technical issues, respond to client inquiries, and escalate significant matters as needed
Engagement and Practice Support
  • Utilize audit software and tools to document work papers, track engagement status, and maintain efficient workflows
  • Stay current on changes in auditing standards, ERISA regulations, and industry best practices
  • Identify opportunities for process improvements to enhance audit quality and efficiency
  • Support business development initiatives by assisting with proposals, scoping new engagements, and participating in client meetings
Qualifications

Education and Certification
  • Bachelors degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field
  • CPA license required or active progress toward CPA certification
Experience
  • Three to five years of public accounting experience with progressive audit responsibilities
  • Prior experience auditing employee benefit plans and ERISA-regulated clients strongly preferred
Technical and Professional Skills
  • Strong working knowledge of audit methodologies, GAAP, ERISA regulations, and employee benefit plan testing requirements
  • Demonstrated ability to supervise and develop audit staff
  • Solid project management and organizational skills
  • Proficiency with audit software, Microsoft Excel, and accounting systems; familiarity with time and billing systems is a plus
