Description We are looking for a detail-oriented Grant Accountant to support financial oversight for grant-funded programs in Chicago, Illinois. This Long-term Contract position will play a key role in maintaining accurate financial records, preparing grant-related reporting, and ensuring compliance with funder requirements. The ideal candidate brings strong nonprofit or grant accounting experience, sound judgment, and the ability to manage recurring deadlines in a fast-paced environment.

Responsibilities:

- Oversee the accuracy of general ledger activity within Quick Books Enterprise and help keep financial records current and well organized.

- Compile reimbursement requests and assemble the financial support needed for submission to grantors.

- Monitor grant income and program spending by funding source to ensure restricted funds are recorded and used appropriately.

- Assist with grant payment requests, financial submissions, and related reporting through EGrAMS and comparable grant management platforms.

- Perform monthly reconciliations for bank and investment accounts and resolve discrepancies in a timely manner.

- Examine transactions such as invoices, deposits, payroll postings, expense classifications, and check processing for accuracy and proper coding.

- Coordinate payroll-related accounting activity and ensure associated entries are reflected correctly in the financial records.

- Develop financial reports on a monthly, quarterly, and annual basis for organizational leadership, including executive and board-level stakeholders.

- Prepare audit schedules and supporting documentation for annual external audits and funder financial reviews.

- Contribute to stronger financial operations by enhancing procedures, documentation practices, and internal control processes. Requirements - At least 3 years of accounting experience, including work with nonprofit organizations or grant-supported programs.

- Hands-on experience using Quick Books Desktop, Quick Books Enterprise, or a similar accounting platform.

- Demonstrated ability to prepare grant reimbursement requests, monitor grant budgets, manage drawdowns, or complete financial reporting for funders.

- Working knowledge of restricted funding, cost allocation, time allocation, and documentation standards tied to grant compliance.

- Experience supporting core accounting functions such as monthly close, reconciliations, accounts payable, payroll coordination, and audit preparation.

- Strong Excel capabilities with a high level of accuracy, discretion, and consistency in meeting deadlines.

- Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or a related field, or equivalent accounting experience.

- Preferred background with government or grant reporting systems, community-based nonprofit organizations, or preparation of finance materials for board review.
