- The Senior Accountant serves as the primary technical and operational manager for grant accounting, regulatory compliance, and day-to-day fund execution. Reporting directly to the Director of Finance, this role works in close partnership with Program Directors, HR, and Development to ensure compliant spend-down and meticulous reporting for approximately $6.5 million in revenue across 60 funding streams. The Senior Accountant leads technical audit preparation, reimbursement voucher generation, expenditure tracking, and routine program staff training.

- Grant Setup & Monitoring:
Review grant agreements to master compliance parameters, allowable cost guidelines, and reporting deadlines across all federal, state, and private awards. - Transaction Approval & Cost Allocations:
Review and approve daily expenditures charged to grant accounts, verifying allowable costs and approving cost transfers to correct variances. - Voucher & Invoice Generation:
Prepare, submit, and reconcile federal, state, and local reimbursement vouchers, ensuring timely cash collections and fund compliance. - Grant Close-Outs:
Manage the technical close-out of grant awards, verifying final spend- downs and submitting complete compliance packages.
Technical Audit Preparation & Reconciliations
- SEFA & Audit Schedule Lead:
Prepare the Schedule of Expenditures of Federal Awards (SEFA) and compile all supporting schedules for external auditors and agency site visits. - General Ledger Reconciliations:
Perform monthly account reconciliations, line-item audits, and grant balance verification to ensure clean financial records for executive reporting. - Corrective Action Implementation:
Collaborate with HR, Operations, and Program leads to execute corrective action plans for any compliance or audit findings.
Operational Program Support & Capacity Building
- Day-to-Day Program Advisory:
Serve as the primary operational contact for Program Directors, providing monthly spend-down reports, budget tracking, and assistance with routine budget amendment requests. - Grant Compliance Training:
Design, update, and facilitate training for new and existing staff on grant administration policies, time allocations, and expense documentation. - Procedural Support:
Assist the Director of Finance in drafting, refining, and enforcing internal accounting procedures and workflow controls
- Experience:
Minimum 5 years of progressive accounting and bookkeeping experience within nonprofits, government agencies, or related sectors. - Regulatory Mastery:
Demonstrated technical knowledge of OMB Uniform Guidance, Single Audit standards, and federal/state grant accounting principles. - Analytical Precision:
Meticulous attention to detail with proven success managing complex multi-funded program budgets. - Collaborative
Skills:
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with a supportive, service-oriented approach to assisting program staff. - Technical Savvy:
High proficiency in modern accounting software, database management, and advanced Excel functions.
Certifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance required; CPA and/or MBA preferred.
Working Conditions:
- This position has a hybrid work schedule which includes weekly in office presence.
- Standard office environment.
- Must be able to occasionally lift items weighing up to 20 lbs.
- Travel to other Mujeres office locations.
- Work evenings and weekends as needed.
