Senior Accountant
The Senior Accountant is involved in and manages aspects of the general accounting functions, fixed asset management, and internal financial statement preparation. They will support and manage the month-end close process, ensuring all transactions are complete, accurate, and recorded in accordance with GAAP. They will also assist with salary and project allocations for global staff. Compensation Range: $80,000– $105,000 Annually. This is a hybrid position with 2 days required in downtown Chicago office.
Responsibilities- Manage and reconcile bank and balance sheet accounts, including resolving all reconciling items. All bank accounts must be reconciled every month. Other balance sheet accounts are to be reconciled no less than quarterly.
- Manage and record the lease accounting according to ASC 842. Provide necessary data for the year-end audit.
- Record journal entries, accruals, and cost allocations.
- Generate invoices for partner organizations and donors. Maintain accounts receivables.
- Monitor capital expenditures, record acquisition, disposal, and depreciation entries, and maintain the fixed asset schedule.
- Work with the Program Management Unit to ensure appropriate account and project coding on project expenditures.
- Prepare financial reports and schedules, including the unrestricted vs. restricted spending analysis.
- Support restricted donor fund and project management processes.
- Assist in the annual financial audit by collecting and reviewing requested documents and preparing necessary schedules and reports.
- Help develop and implement new procedures and process improvements to meet operational needs and improve accuracy and efficiency.
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance is required, and a CPA is preferred.
- 4-6 years of accounting experience, preferably at a non-profit organization.
- Public accounting audit experience preferred.
- Previous experience with an ERP system, preferably using fund accounting.
- Strong organizational skills & attention to detail.
- Excellent understanding of processes is required. The person in this position is expected to take an active role in ensuring that system usage is maximized, manual processes are reduced or eliminated and automation is advanced.
- Good interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills with the ability to communicate cross-functionally at all levels.
- Ability to act and operate independently with minimal daily direction from the manager to accomplish objectives.
- Ability to work well under the pressure of deadlines and to independently prioritize in a fast-paced environment.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office with intermediate to advanced Excel and PowerPoint skills.
- Experience with accounting and donor management software (Financial Edge) (Raiser's Edge) is a plus.
- An understanding of and a commitment to advancing the mission and values of Opportunity International.
- Written and verbal fluency in English required, fluency in French or Spanish desirable.
- Minimal travel will be required for this position.
