Payroll Accountant

We are seeking a Payroll Accountant with at least three years of payroll and accounting experience for a position with a reputable organization located in the Chicago Loop/Downtown Chicago area. The ideal candidate will have experience processing payroll, preparing payroll-related accounting entries, and utilizing ADP Workforce Now.

Payroll Accountant Responsibilities:

  • Process weekly, bi-weekly, and semi-monthly payroll for employees
  • Calculate and reconcile employee federal and state income taxes, Social Security taxes, unemployment taxes, and workers' compensation payments
  • Prepare and process employee payroll deductions and adjustments
  • Manage wage garnishments and other payroll-related with holdings
  • Review and reconcile payroll data from timesheets and attendance systems
  • Maintain PTO, vacation, sick leave, and other employee leave balances within the payroll system
  • Prepare payroll reimbursement requests and related documentation
  • Record monthly payroll journal entries and account reconciliations
  • Review, analyze, and verify payroll reports for accuracy and compliance
  • Assist with month-end and year-end close activities related to payroll
  • Prepare quarterly and annual payroll tax filings and supporting schedules
  • Support internal and external audits by providing payroll documentation and analysis
  • Assist with special projects and process improvement initiatives as requested by management

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field
  • 3+ years of payroll and/or payroll accounting experience
  • Experience preparing payroll journal entries and account reconciliations
  • Previous experience with ADP Workforce Now required
  • Strong understanding of payroll tax regulations and compliance requirements
  • Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and meet deadlines
  • High degree of professionalism and accountability

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with payroll accounting, general ledger reconciliations, and month-end close
  • Knowledge of multi-state payroll processing
  • Advanced Excel skills (VLOOKUPs, Pivot Tables, and data analysis)
