Monopar Therapeutics is a clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company focused on developing innovative treatments for patients with unmet medical needs.
This is a hands-on leadership role on a small finance team. The Executive Director/VP of Finance and Accounting owns the company’s accounting, tax, treasury, and SEC reporting functions end to end, setting direction and doing the day-to-day work. The right candidate leads and develops a small team while remaining comfortable being both the reviewer and the preparer, and partners closely with HR, payroll, and outside advisors.
What you’ll do…
- Oversee the scaling and optimization of accounting systems and processes within Microsoft Business Central, including identifying opportunities to automate or streamline processes and executing planned automation and technological advances.
- Own the monthly, quarterly, and annual close across Accounts Payable, leases, payroll, and stock compensation, including preparing and reviewing journal entries and performing account and bank reconciliations directly as needed.
- Lead the preparation and review of SEC filings, including Forms 10-Q, 10-K, and 8-K, and manage the audit and review cycles with external auditors and outside counsel.
- Own accounting policies and compliance, ensuring conformity with US Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (US GAAP) and applicable laws, regulations, and SEC requirements.
- Own internal control over financial reporting (ICFR), including designing, documenting, and testing key controls.
- Manage all tax matters with the external tax advisors, including the income tax provision, federal, state, and local filings, R&D credit studies, and 1099 reporting.
- Manage treasury and cash operations, including cash forecasting, bank relationships, wire and payment approvals, and Accounts Payable oversight.
- Oversee the investment portfolio, including accounting for and reporting on short-term investments, monitoring compliance with the investment policy, and coordinating with investment advisors.
- Administer equity, including option and RSU grants, stock-based compensation accounting, cap table and equity plan maintenance, and support for Section 16 and equity-related disclosures.
- Coordinate with HR and payroll on compensation, benefits, and 401(k) matters, including payroll processing and review, payroll tax filings, and the annual 401(k) audit.
- Ad Hoc Accounting tasks, including ad hoc technical accounting analysis, as necessary.
What skills & experience you’ll bring to us…
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, economics or a related field; CPA strongly preferred
- 15+ years of progressive accounting and finance experience, including public company SEC reporting; clinical-stage biopharma or life sciences experience preferred
- Hands-on operator who is comfortable owning the work as well as reviewing it, leading and developing a small team while staying directly involved in the day-to-day
- Working knowledge of internal control over financial reporting and SOX requirements in a public company environment, including control documentation, testing, and remediation
- Direct experience with tax compliance and the income tax provision, working alongside external tax advisors
- Experience with treasury and cash management, short-term investment portfolios, and bank administration
- Experience administering equity plans, including option and RSU grants and stock-based compensation accounting
- Experience overseeing payroll, benefits, and 401(k) administration and audit
- Knowledge of key US GAAP accounting topics including, but not limited to, stock-based compensation, fair value measurements, and leases
- Proficiency with Microsoft 365 Suite and ADP
- Experience with Microsoft Business Central and Certent
- Experience with Excel (VLOOKUP, XLOOKUP, INDEX, MATCH, PIVOT TABLES, etc.)
- Experience with creating improvements in Business Central
- Passionate about continuous improvement, and creation of efficient workflow processes
- Ability to work in the Company’s Wilmette, Illinois office (north of Chicago) five days per week. This is primarily an on-site role; however, for exceptionally qualified candidates residing outside the greater Chicago area, the Company may consider a limited hybrid arrangement requiring on-site presence for one week every four to five weeks.

The estimated base pay for this position is $235,000- $285,000. Our benefits package includes health insurance, paid time off, 401k, annual corporate bonus, and stock options. Compensation is determined based on qualifications and experience.
