Who We Are
The Australian Consulate-General represents the Australian Government in Chicago. We support diplomatic, consular, and international engagement activities on behalf of Australia.
About the Temporary Employment Registry
We maintain a Temporary Employment Registry to fill short-term vacancies as they arise throughout the year. These roles are typically less than six months in duration, with some offering flexible working hours. All positions are generally office-based at our downtown Chicago location.
Typical temporary roles include:
- Passport processing officers and consular assistants.
- Project management officers - supporting short-term initiatives and events.
- Executive assistants - providing high-level administrative support to executives.
- Administrative assistants - supporting finance, HR, property, security or IT functions.
Temporary roles are offered to suitable candidates based on suitability, availability, and/or qualifications and experience (if required). Employment is subject to the completion of pre-employment background checks for all individuals.
Longer-term roles and jobs may arise and will be advertised separately on our Current Vacancies page.
Who Can Apply
To be eligible, applicants must:
- Be a United States citizen, a lawful permanent resident (Green Card holder), or hold a valid Employment Authorisation Document (Form I-566) issued by USCIS
- Be at least 20 years old at the time of employment (required for registration with the U.S. Office of Foreign Missions).
- Reside in the Chicago area and be able to reliably commute to our downtown Chicago location M-F. The Consulate-General is unable to provide relocation support.
If an Offer is made
If you are contacted with a temporary employment offer, you will be asked to provide:
- A completed Pre-Employment Probity Check Form (PDF), including all supporting documentation.
