Introduction
MWRD's Internship Program offers paid internship positions. While the main focus is on wastewater management, there are opportunities to gain knowledge and practical experience in a wide range of functions in each department.
Paid InternsPaid interns are limited to 119 working days per calendar year and receive $18.00 per hour.
Required Documents- Letter of recommendation from a class instructor, professor, or Internship Coordinator from current school or university.
- Cover letter stating interest in position.
- Resume.
- Currently enrolled in a degree-seeking program in an accredited college or university and will be enrolled in the 2026/2027 school year.
- Permanent residency within the territorial boundaries of the MWRD (students may attend school outside the territorial boundaries).
- You must be a citizen or national of the United States, or an individual who is otherwise legally authorized to work in the United States.

The Information Technology Department of the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago (the District) is seeking an intern to support both the Network Management Unit and the Network Infrastructure Unit.
The internship will primarily involve hands-on tasks related to networking and data center operations. A major focus will be documenting infrastructure within each IDF, MDF, and data center. This includes creating network diagrams using Microsoft Visio and compiling asset inventories with corresponding retirement schedules for each location.
The intern will also assist with processing decommissioned equipment for disposal, including preparing items for eWaste and iBid procedures. Infrastructure slated for destruction may include, but is not limited to, tape media, outdated networking equipment, and obsolete server and SAN hardware.
Candidates must be able to work at multiple locations and provide their own transportation to various MWRD facilities throughout Cook County.
Minimum Qualifications and RequirementsCandidates for this position should be pursuing a career in IT with an interest in learning more about network, server, and storage management. Candidates must possess a driver's license and be capable of transportation to various facilities throughout Cook County.
Educational RequirementsApplicants must be a current graduate or undergraduate student seeking a degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Data Science, or Cybersecurity.
