Regulatory Compliance Specialist, Financial Compliance
What You’ll Do
As a Country SME within Avalara's International Compliance Operations team, you'll help ensure accurate, scalable VAT compliance delivery across multiple European jurisdictions while supporting the future of automated compliance solutions. This role combines deep VAT expertise with operational leadership, helping customers navigate complex compliance requirements while partnering with Product, Engineering, and Tax Technology teams to improve automation and digital filing capabilities.
You'll play a key role in managing compliance risk, strengthening audit readiness, and improving how compliance services are delivered at scale.
- Be a subject matter expert for VAT compliance across one or more EU jurisdictions
- Manage complex VAT cases, including audits, disputes, and escalations
- Lead communication with tax authorities, including registrations, filings, enquiries, and penalty challenges
- Represent Avalara in interactions with tax authorities, including audit participation (remote or in person across European jurisdictions)
- Support delivery teams in resolving complex VAT compliance issues
- Provide expert guidance on VAT legislation, rulings, and compliance requirements
- Collaborate with Product, Engineering, and Tax Technology teams on automation and compliance solutions
- Support development of automated VAT return submission processes via APIs and other digital channels
- Contribute to development of scalable compliance models, including self‑service approaches
- Identify and implement process improvements to increase efficiency and reduce risk
- Support the creation and maintenance of SOPs and compliance documentation
- Keep up to date with legislative changes and share insights across teams
- Mentor team members and raise technical capability across the organisation
- Bachelor's degree in Tax, Finance, Accounting, or a related discipline
- 5+ years of relevant VAT compliance experience within EU jurisdictions
- Proven experience managing complex VAT cases, audits, and tax authority interactions
- Strong knowledge of EU VAT legislation and compliance processes
- Experience working with tax authorities across one or more EU jurisdictions
- Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret complex tax regulations
- Experience engaging with tax authorities and clients
- Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast‑paced environment
- Proven experience using AI or automation tools to improve efficiency, accuracy, or decision‑making in compliance or operational workflows
- Additional European languages would be highly beneficial
