We are partnered with a well-established heavy civil contractor in the Chicago market that is actively seeking a Project Estimator to support a strong pipeline of infrastructure and utility work across the region. This contractor has built a solid reputation delivering complex civil projects and is known for its self‑perform capabilities and consistent backlog of secured work.
This role is ideal for an estimator with experience pricing underground utilities, site development, excavation, and public infrastructure projects within a union‑heavy environment.
Position OverviewThe Project Estimator will be responsible for preparing accurate and competitive bids across a range of heavy civil projects. You will work closely with operations, project management, and field teams to develop cost strategies and support successful project pursuits.
Key Responsibilities- Prepare detailed cost estimates for heavy civil projects, including utilities, excavation, grading, and sitework
- Perform quantity takeoffs from drawings, specifications, and bid documents
- Analyze project risks and develop pricing strategies to remain competitive
- Solicit and evaluate subcontractor and supplier quotes
- Level bids and ensure scope coverage aligns with project requirements
- Build and maintain relationships with local subcontractors and vendors
- Collaborate with project managers and field teams to validate means and methods
- Assist in developing project schedules and sequencing plans
- Support value engineering and cost‑saving initiatives
- Participate in pre‑bid meetings and site walks
- Prepare bid packages and ensure timely submission of proposals
- Maintain organized documentation for all estimates and bid files
- 3–10+ years of estimating experience within heavy civil construction
- Strong experience with underground utilities, earthwork, or site development projects
- Familiarity with public agency work (IDOT, municipal, or utility authorities)
- Ability to read and interpret civil drawings, specifications, and bid packages
- Proficiency in estimating software (e.g., HCSS, Heavy Bid, Bluebeam, or similar)
- Strong communication and organizational skills
- Experience working in a union labor environment
- Exposure to self‑perform contractors
- Knowledge of Chicago‑area subcontractor and supplier market
- Experience pricing projects ranging from $1M – $20M+
- Base salary up to $160,000
