Assistant Superintendent

Powers & Sons Construction

Chicago, IL (100% local, no travel)

Position Summary

The Assistant Superintendent supports the Superintendent and Project Team in the daily field operations of commercial construction projects. This role helps ensure projects are completed safely, on schedule, within budget, and according to company quality standards. The Assistant Superintendent coordinates subcontractors, monitors site activities, assists with scheduling, and promotes a culture of safety and accountability on every project.

Key Responsibilities Field Operations
  • Assist the Superintendent with daily site supervision and coordination of subcontractors and vendors.
  • Help manage project schedules and ensure work progresses according to milestones.
  • Coordinate daily construction activities to maintain workflow efficiency.
  • Participate in site logistics planning, material deliveries, equipment coordination, and workforce management.
  • Monitor work for compliance with plans, specifications, building codes, and quality standards.
  • Maintain clean, organized, and professional jobsite conditions.
  • Assist with project closeout activities, punch lists, inspections, and turnover documentation.
Safety Management
  • Promote and enforce company safety policies and OSHA compliance.
  • Conduct regular jobsite safety inspections and participate in safety meetings.
  • Assist in documenting incidents, near misses, corrective actions, and safety observations.
  • Ensure subcontractors follow all site safety requirements and maintain proper documentation.
Scheduling and Coordination
  • Assist with short‑term and long‑term scheduling activities.
  • Coordinate subcontractor sequencing and resolve field conflicts.
  • Participate in project meetings, including subcontractor coordination meetings and owner/architect meetings.
  • Track progress and communicate schedule impacts or concerns to the Superintendent and Project Manager.
Quality Control
  • Support quality assurance and quality control processes throughout construction.
  • Identify deficiencies and ensure corrective actions are completed.
  • Assist with inspections and testing coordination.
  • Help ensure all work meets project specifications and client expectations.
Documentation and Reporting
  • Maintain accurate daily reports, manpower logs, and jobsite documentation.
  • Assist with tracking RFIs, submittals, inspections, and field changes.
  • Document weather conditions, delays, incidents, and project progress.
  • Support project documentation efforts using construction management software.
Qualifications

Education and Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Engineering, or related field preferred.
  • Equivalent field experience in commercial construction may be considered.
  • 2–5 years of construction field experience preferred.
  • Experience with commercial, industrial, educational, healthcare, or public‑sector construction projects is a plus.
Knowledge and Skills
  • Basic understanding of construction means and methods.
  • Familiarity with construction scheduling and sequencing.
  • Knowledge of OSHA safety standards and jobsite safety practices.
  • Ability to read and interpret construction drawings and specifications.
  • Strong communication, leadership, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast‑paced environment.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and construction management software.
Preferred Qualifications
  • OSHA 30 certification preferred.
  • Experience with Procore, Bluebeam, Microsoft Project, or similar software preferred.
  • CPR/First Aid certification is a plus.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to walk active construction sites for extended periods.
  • Ability to climb ladders, navigate uneven terrain, and work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds occasionally.
  • Must be able to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE).
Work Environment

Primarily based on active construction jobsites. May require early mornings, evenings, or occasional weekends depending on project schedules. Travel to project sites may be required.
