Number of Positions: 1 (Additional vacancies possible pending budget approval)

Starting Salary: $68,616.00 annually

This position is open to the public and all current City employees covered under the City's collective bargaining agreement with AMERICAN FEDERATION OF STATE, COUNTY, AND MUNICIPAL EMPLOYEES (AFSCME) - BARGAINING UNIT 1, 3, 4 & 5. Only employees in City job titles in this bargaining unit are eligible to bid.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES
  • Conducts research, compiles information, and drafts copy for inclusion into departmental public information materials (i.e., brochures, pamphlets, newsletters, presentations).
  • Prepares press releases to disseminate information to the public.
  • Develops designs and logos for publications.
  • Coordinates the audio-visual, graphic arts and photographic support services used in the preparation of displays and exhibits.
  • Participates and coordinates attendance of designated personnel at community and public information meetings.
  • Prepares and updates calendar of departmental activities and special events.
  • Assists in the planning and coordination of meetings, conferences, and special events.
  • Monitors supply of program information publications and prepares orders to replenish existing stock.
  • Utilizes blogs and social media platforms to communicate department programs, events and services.
  • Researches and compiles information in response to Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests.
  • Attends community meetings to inform the public of programs and services, as required.

Additional duties may be required for this position.

Location: 2 N. LaSalle St., Suite 970, Chicago, IL 60602

Days: Monday through Friday

Hours: 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM

THIS POSITION IS IN THE CAREER SERVICE

QUALIFICATIONS

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor's degree or higher in journalism, communications, English or a directly related field, plus one (1) year of experience in the preparation and dissemination of public information,

OR

graduation from an accredited college or university with an associate degree in journalism, communications, English or a directly related field, plus three (3) years of experience in the preparation and dissemination of public information,

OR

five (5) years of work experience in the preparation and dissemination of public information.

SELECTION REQUIREMENTS

This position requires applicants to successfully complete an interview which will include a written exercise and/or skills assessment as part of the interview. The interviewed candidate(s) possessing the qualifications best suited to fulfill the responsibilities of the position, based on the oral and written parts of the interview will be selected.

NOTE: A writing sample will be required at the time of interview.

WRITING SAMPLE

Applicants must provide a writing sample at the time of interview. All writing samples submitted in consideration for employment must comply with the following criteria:

  • the sample may either be a professional project report, academic project report, an official communication related to a professional or academic project, or a work-related report or communication
  • each writing sample submitted must be no more than (10) pages
  • each writing sample must be accompanied by a cover page explaining:
  • A. The sample's original purpose (e.g. a writing class, a professional project, a memorandum for an employer)
  • B. When (MM/DD/YYYY) and for whom the sample was written
  • C. The extent of editing by any third party (if any)
  • D. If the writing sample is an excerpt from a larger document, identify that larger document and provide context, if necessary
  • If an applicant chooses to submit a writing sample containing confidential or privileged information, the applicant must identify the steps taken, (red actions, name changes, or consent from the client or employer) to preserve the confidential or privileged nature of the document.
