Special Events Intern – Off The Rail Concert Series Dept/Div:
Tourism & Special Events

The City of Carbondale’s Tourism and Special Events Division is seeking a motivated, dependable, and energetic intern to assist with the production and execution of the Off the Rails Concert Series during the Fall 2026 season. This position provides valuable, hands‑on experience in event planning, logistics, marketing, and community engagement. The intern will work under the supervision of the Tourism & Special Events Coordinator and will play an integral role in delivering high‑quality, engaging community events.

Duties
  • On‑site event setup and teardown
  • Event logistics
    , including vendor communication, equipment coordination, and site management
  • Distribute promotional materials and manage community outreach
  • Social media content and event marketing efforts
  • Hospitality support to artists, vendors, and performers
  • Attend and support all scheduled concert series events and promotional activities
  • Maintain clear and consistent communication with the Tourism & Special Events Coordinator
Requirements
  • Strong organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends as required by event schedules
  • Physically able to participate in event setup and breakdown activities
  • Dependable
    , punctual
    , and able to manage time effectively
  • Required attendance for event dates as follows:
    • Saturday August 15
    • Saturday August 29
    • Friday September 4
    • Saturday September 19
    • Friday October 2
    • Friday October 16
  • Safely drive a City‑assigned vehicle for City projects for the events and needs of the Tourism and Special Events Division.
  • Effectively operate basic office equipment and small tools; i.e., cameras, calculators, copy machines, telephone, computer; etc.
  • Communicate effectively with City employees and the public in person, in writing, and by telephone. Comprehend and follow oral and written communications.
  • Use tact, good judgment, and employ effective interpersonal skills with coworkers and the public; coordinate and cooperate with other City staff to perform functions; work effectively both independently and as a team member.
Other Duties

Perform other duties as assigned for the overall operation of the Tourism and Special Events Division.

Work Environment

Work is performed in both office and outdoor settings, exposing employees to extreme heat.

Physical Demands

Work outdoors requires frequent physical effort such as walking, standing, and lifting objects of moderate weight, 15–49 pounds, for short durations. Work also involves perceiving and/or discriminating colors, sounds, depth, and texture.

Minimum Acceptable Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent. Previous experience in event coordination
, marketing
, or hospitality is a plus. An interest in the arts, music, tourism, or public service is also beneficial. Additionally, skills in social media management
, photography
, or content creation are a plus. Must have and maintain a valid Illinois driver’s license. Pass a background check and a drug and alcohol test.

Range 3 $ 18.00
