Deputy Bureau Chief, Chicago – The Wall Street Journal

The Wall Street Journal is looking for an ambitious, sharp-minded Deputy Bureau Chief to help drive our newsroom from the heart of the Midwest. Based in Chicago, you’ll help run a high-powered bureau responsible for chronicling the forces reshaping global commerce—from the farm fields and factories feeding the world to SpaceX’s stratospheric ambitions, the shifting battlefronts of defense, and the cutthroat battle for your grocery cart.

As Deputy Bureau Chief, you will play a central role in managing, coaching, and inspiring a talented team of reporters covering high-stakes, fast-moving beats. You will ensure our coverage leads the conversation through quick-turn breaking news, exclusive scoops, clear analysis, and ambitious, agenda-setting enterprise journalism.

What You Will Do
  • Partner with the Bureau Chief to manage daily operations, story assignments, and long-term planning for the bureau's coverage areas.
  • Edit fast-breaking news, company updates, and deep-dive enterprise stories with speed, precision, and high standards for fairness and accuracy.
  • Help reporters in Chicago and other Journal cultivate sharp instincts for scoops while guiding them toward distinctive, high-impact feature and investigative work.
  • Collaborate seamlessly with visuals, graphics, audio, video, data, and platform strategy teams to maximize the reach and storytelling format of every piece.
  • Coordinate effectively with editing desks and bureau leaders across the newsroom’s worldwide offices to elevate the team’s coverage across all Dow Jones platforms.
What You Bring
  • At least 5–7 years of journalism experience, with a proven track record as an editor or reporter covering business, finance, or corporate beats.
  • A track record of identifying important stories, driving coverage and delivering scoops and enterprise in multiple formats.
  • High-level communication skills and excellent writing and editing ability.
  • Strong experience managing, developing and leading a team
  • Demonstrated leadership qualities with a passion for mentoring journalists at varying stages of their careers.
  • Strong digital acumen and a collaborative approach to multi-platform storytelling.
  • A deep curiosity about the economic, industrial, and cultural forces shaping commerce in the Midwest and global markets.

This position is full-time and based in our Chicago office. You will report directly to the Chicago Bureau Chief.
