The Shakespeare Project of Chicago seeks a creative and detail-oriented Costume Designer for our upcoming production of Dear Rhoda at Theater Wit in January 2027. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of period design, specifically the 1920s, and the ability to visually tell a story through clothing that reflects character, class, and the cultural vibrancy of the era.
Key Responsibilities:- Collaborate with the director and design team to develop a cohesive costume design concept that supports the play’s themes and narrative.
- Research and interpret 1920s fashion, including professional-class, working-class, and bohemian subcultures of Chicago.
- Design, source, or build costumes for a diverse cast of characters, including historical figures such as Clarence Darrow, Carl Sandburg and Fanny Brice.
- Manage costume budget, rentals, purchases, and/or construction.
- Work collaboratively with actors, oversee fittings, alterations, and costume continuity throughout the run.
- Ensure all costumes are production- ready by technical rehearsals.
- Experience as a Costume Designer for theater productions (professional or academic).
- Strong knowledge of period costume history, particularly the 1920s.
- Ability to work collaboratively and communicate effectively with a creative team.
- Proficiency in sketching, draping, sewing, and/or sourcing costumes.
- Strong organizational and time-management skills.
- Familiarity with Chicago’s theater community and resources is a plus.
